The Ram, Kingston Upon Thames

The Ram's alright. The beer garden is pretty good in the summer, and the food is palatable. My mate reckons it stinks of piss. I can't really see where he's coming from myself, although the toilets are small, and lead directly into the main body of the pub, so maybe he caught a waft sometime. He is a bullshitter of course, but then again I can't see what he'd have to gain by making up stories about pissy pubs. I guess I have to believe him.

At the current time, it's being ripped out, so we'll see what they do with it after that...perhaps the stench of piss will be gone. Perhaps it will be stronger - perhaps much stronger. We can only wait and see.

Corkys Wine Bar, Surbiton

Corkys is a grim, joyless place. Most of the locals can count their yellow teeth on one hand. It's unpleasant even to walk past. It reeks of stale beer and despair.

There is no reason to ever go there.

The Druid's Head, Kingston Upon Thames

Good beer, good pub food, plus a beer garden. Also a late licence - I've rolled in there many a time after 11pm with no problem at all, and never seen a scrap of trouble. The bouncers are great; really polite fellas. And there's some pretty hot barmaids as well. Yeah, this is one of Kingston's better pubs I think

The Railway, Putney

Been in here a few times over the past week, so I've seen a bit more of the place. The bar staff are so mixed - there are some really nice people working there, but some absolute arseholes as well. The hobbit they have for a manager really needs to get laid or something, she's fierce. And that fat barman with the imperious, sneering attitude - dude, it's no surprise to see you with a black eye...

I've seen two fights recently. One gang decided to beat up some white haired old dude. Give him his due, the old timer stood his ground and gave back as good as he got, told the police all about it later with a smile on his face - hat's off to that tough old bastard. The other one was standard pub scrapping, you know, drunk guys bashing each other with chairs, that kind of thing.

I did have a pretty good burger one evening though.

The Green Man, Putney Heath

Don't really understand the phalanx of negative comments on this page...the beer's good, the place is warm and comfortable, and small enough to be cosy without feeling crampled. I've yet to go there in the summer but their huge beer garden looks like a winner to me. Staff were absolutely fine, no problems at all. Hardly going to set the world alight, but who wants a pub that's alight anyway.

The Railway, Putney

Typical Wetherspoons, just the same as any other in the country. It's pretty cheap, on a Monday you're talking 1.75 a pint, which would be good even outside of London. Flip side of this is that there's a fair number of weirdos in there. Last Monday some midget bloke in a Inter Milan shirt started singing Beach Boys hits to me while I was at the bar. "Best band in the world mate, best band in the world." he chirruped as he danced.

What else? Service for food is pretty crap, but the grub itself is ok, and the beer's not bad. There is a tiny assistant manager who's a bit of a dragon, especially when last orders draws near. Then again, if I had to deal with all those oddballs I might be sucking a lemon as well.

Think of it like a no-frills boozer, all the overheads cut out to bring prices down. EasyPub, perhaps.

Filthy McNasty's II, Twickenham

Filthys is great - you have to take these places as they're meant to be enjoyed. If you want a quiet gentile pint next to dog by the fire, go elsewhere. You want to rock out, get yourself to Filthys. Yeah there are a few nobheads in there, but that's par for the course with grotty music bars. Went to their Sunday afternoon blues session last week and it was excellent.

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

The Eel Pie is a great pub. I've been through the range of sessions in this place, and it always delivers. Layout's great and there's plenty of space. The beer is good and they serve the mighty Blandford Fly in bottles. A pub with a great ambience.

The Cabbage Patch, Twickenham

I've always quite liked the Patch, though I only drink in the wooden side. 4 pool tables and a big screen for the footy. Get there half an hour early and you've got a great seat, then a few rounds of pool after the game. What right-thinking chap wouldn't be into that? It's normally got some reasonable totty in as well. Yeah it is a bit expensive but you're talking about 10p on a pint. That's like a quid over a ten pint session. Place seems alright to me.

No.1 Kew Road, Richmond

Edwards exists for one single reason; to sell as much over-priced lager as possible to late-night pissheads. That's all there is. Everyone's been to clubs like this - queuing outside behind a shivering girl in silver hotpants, the surly Neanderthal bouncers smug behind the goatees on their fat faces. Inside packed to bursting in clear breach of every fire regulation known to man, the carpet sticky with drink. Later, the bright lights of throw out time and the aggressive shouting of the bouncers to drink up a bottle the staff served you 8 seconds before. Outside, several fights in the street and a van full of coppers giving chavs a last chance to avoid a night in the cells. It's a dump, and it knows it, but why would they care? It's rammed every weekend. If you're sober enough to think twice you're far too sober. Strictly for the pie-eyed.

The Dukes Head, Richmond

Great pub with top beer & good grub. Pat the landlord hosts a pub quiz on a Wednesday - assuming he's in a capable state to do so that is. Quiz is pretty good but some of them take it a bit seriously. Well worth a visit, if you can find it.

The Blue Anchor, Richmond

I've always found this pub pretty friendly, and got on fine with everyone there. Also had no trouble getting in the pool table; had to thrash a few locals first mind you. I can understand why people find it a little frosty; the bar flies seem to prefer each others company - but so what? The beer's fine, the staff are friendly, and the chairs, though springy, are comfy enough. Anything this close to Richmond that hasn't turned into a wine bar is worth keeping in my book.

The landlord really does look like Al Murray as well.

The Crown, Richmond

There's something about the pubs on this stretch of Lower Mortlake Road that make them very difficult to get settled in to. The furniture is not great, nor particularly comfortable. The inside seems sparse and always a little too cold to take off your jacket. Also, even when it's half full there seems to always be people in your way blocking the bar/toilets/pool table. Maybe it's something in the design but I can't quite put my finger on it. Fairly crap, but plenty worse.

8 Aug 2005 18:25

The Jolly Coopers, Hampton

A good pub which manages to maintain the atmosphere and furnishings of a traditional alehouse without looking 40 years out of date for a re-fit. Staff are really friendly and the beer's excellent as well. Certainly the best pub in Hampton.

The Anchor, Seatown

Just spent three nights at a local campsite and ate & drank there every night. Food was cheap, plentiful and delicious; the beer was pretty good also. The beer garden takes in the whole horizon with cliffs rising either side. Bar staff were chatty and pleasant, and the service was good. Check out the memorabilia on the walls if you go; it provides a history of the place going back centuries. A great old pub by the coast.

8 Aug 2005 17:39

The Bell Inn, Hampton

This pub would seem more at home in Central London. It's too bright, too loud and too pricey for their very average beer. Comfortable enough but no real atmosphere. Worst of all, the bar staff are stacking chairs on the table next to you at 11.01pm, and coming up every 20 seconds to ask you to drink up. Personally I find someone spraying disinfectant next to me when I'm drinking doesn't add to the ambience. Give it a miss and head for the Jolly Coopers round the corner.

24 May 2005 23:23

The Coach and Horses, Kew

A Young's pub with all the standard Young's beers on draught and a lot more bottled behind the bar. Gets pretty busy but you can usually get a seat. Service is great and the food, though a bit pricey, is always good. Beer garden out the back has plenty of seats and is great in the Summer. Only drawback is that it's possibly the smokiest pub in London; their expensive looking ventilation just seems to blow it around. That said, certainly worth a visit.

18 Mar 2005 12:39

The Lass O'Richmond Hill, Richmond

The Lass O'Richmond Hill is more a restaurnant than a pub, and as a restaurant it excels. Though pricey, the food is excellent. They serve the best pub steak I've had in London, and the other meals on their extensive menu are equally superb. However if you're not eating there's little point in coming here; it's true that the service is not great, as most of the staff wait tables. There's not a great selection of beer, and the music is quite the blandest of easy listening jazz. Verdict? One to take your Mum to when she visits, but go elsewhere for a pint.
