The Highbury Vaults, Bristol

Properly nice pub - cheeky staff, great enclosed outside drinking area, higgledy-piggeldy inside, and proper ciders and ales on tap.

The Hare On The Hill, Bristol

Outstanding little pub, very friendly staff, nice clientele, yummy food and all the Bath Ales and good scotches you could want.

Being Bath Ales run, it occasionally has the fantastic "Rare Hare". Which is worth a taste.

The Pipe and Slippers, Montpelier

Great if you get there for a pint after work - gets a bit crowded and loud later.

The Beaufort, Montpelier

Lovely pub, lovely people (both sides of the bar).

The Cadbury House, Montpelier

They do some good ales, but the atmosphere is not fantastic - too many braying trustafarians. Has also been a really smoky pub so not sure how it will fare with the ban.

The Jolly Porter, Exeter

What the hell happened to the JP? Just went to Exeter, and popped in for a beer. All of the decor, food, and soul has gone, half the decoration ripped out, it was truly dire, and used to be one of the best pubs in the area. A true shame. We made our excuses and left. Please ignore earlier 5th May post.

The Alehouse, Reading

Stumbled across this place by chance, with a real-ale fanatic friend and girlfriends in tow. Four people crammed in a booth the size of a telephone box drinking some smashing real ales - absolute heaven. Great atmosphere, great beer - wish I lived near!

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

A wonderful gem of a pub. Sam Smith ales :-) excellent dingy Victorian ambience. Best pub I've found in London.

Timepiece, Exeter

Always hugely popular, and really a club bar, Timepiece Bar has, amongst it's many charms as mentioned by others, the unique virtue of being the only place you can just walk into and get a drink after time has been called everywhere else in Exeter. You pay to get in the Club upstairs, but the Bar is basically a pub that opens until 1.30 in the morning. It makes you feel practically continental. Timepiece is an Exeter institution, and rightly so.

The Imperial, Exeter

Rumour has it that new Wetherspoons managers are taken to the Imperial, and told that this is what they should be aiming for. They should be. This is the best [only good?] Wetherspoons Pub I've been in. Great Beer Festivals (bi-annual, I think) curry nights, good and changing selection of ales - and the orangery is something else. Sweeping lawns, big windows, close to the University, St David's Station, and a short walk from the City Centre.

The Jolly Porter, Exeter

This is a very good pub - good beers, food, usually a good atmosphere too. A nice mix of locals, students, and inebriated lecturers. The best pub in the St David's area.

The Red Lion, Southampton

This pub has a resident parrot. If that does not persuade you to go there, then go for the history and the unexpectedly huge timber-framed interior. This is the place where Henry V tried his traitorous courtiers on the eve of sailing for France and Agincourt. Watch the Kenneth Brannagh version of Henry V before going there, and feel all cultural for the price of a pint. And try getting the parrot to talk back to you.

The Lizard Lounge, Southampton

If you look as scruffy as I normally do, you won't feel at home. However, this place does a superb range of lagers - if you go in when it's nearly empty, in the daytime, it's great. I suspect that if your beauty is of the external rether than the internal variety, you will like it here in the evenings, too.

The Giddy Bridge, Southampton

I'd say this is in the lower quartile of Wetherspoons' offerings.

It's a good place to go if it starts raining really hard when you are nearby. I can't think of another reason to go there.

Food and beer same as all Wetherspoons.

The Platform Tavern, Southampton

This is one of the best pubs in Southampton. Often has live music of the folk/roots variety - not too large, and has a good variety of drinks to please the real ale or even the more discerning larger drinker.

Great atmosphere - african masks, wall hangings, bespoke stained glass - candles in bottles, friendly staff.

This is a real gem in a city mainly provided-for by big chain sports pubs.

The Old Fire House, Exeter

This is a superb little pub - friendly. a welcoming atmosphere (think Parisian bar - checked table cloths, candles in bottles, plenty of decoration and a pleasing patina on the walls) - always full of people and chat. Beer is very reasonably priced (although the real ale drinker won't get a wide selection). There's an upstairs too, which is less crowded than downstairs usually. Downstairs can be fairly packed, as the size of the place is pretty small. Upstairs there are large tables and big open sash windows.

The Crown Inn, Southampton

A good solid little pub with a friendly atmosphere and an open fireplace in cold weather. The food is good, and they have a reasonable selection of beers. It is a great place for University staff to go for lunch, and is certainly the nicest* pub within easy walking distance of the University's Highfield campus. The Crown caters for groups (but make sure you book about 24 hours in advance if you want to eat - they fill-up quickly!).

* It has the edge over the closer Stile pub - but it is a close thing
