Just to update, I still agree with what I posted in 2004. The best place to go in Whitehaven.

Now known as the Boot Inn. This was a superb pub (free house) but has now been bought by Robinsons and new licencees installed. Wait and see.

The Old Crown, Hesket Newmarket
Most of the Hesket Newmarket brewery range of beers are usually on - just limited by pumps and bar space. Worth the detour to visit

The Punchbowl, Great Broughton
Great conversation and great welcome from a smashing couple who know how to keep their beer!

This is not exactly a pub - more the brewery's hospitality room. The beer is always on top form here! Next to a nice brewery shop. The end of abrewery tour. Opening hours strictly limited!!

A really top pub - just what a locals' pub in a tourist trap town should be. Beer is always superb. If I lived in Cockermouth it would def be my local - if they'd have me, that is!!

I disagree with the last comment about the beer. On my last few visits there I have had some superb beers, particularly those brewed in the pub.

The Strands Hotel, Nether Wasdale
Over the road from the Screes and owned by the same people. They make sure they have different beers on at each pub, generally offering from Yates, Derwent and Jennings, and sometimes other Cumbrian brewers.

Slate floors?? No - it's creaking floorboards! But yes - it's a really nice place, good food, good beer- lots of choice (Jennings), several awards. Lovely views outside - next to river and close to Gable, Sca Fell etc.

Worth a visit. 1-2 guest beers, keen landlord. Accommodation at reasonable prices.

The Manor Arms, Broughton in Furness
A very popular pub amongst real ale drinkers because of the number, range and quality of guest beers. One of 6-7 participants in the annual Broughton Festival of Beer.
