The Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye

I love this pub and used to come in all the time before I moved and I went back last night for the first time in ages ... and it will be while before I think about trying it again.

The pub remains much the same, good beer, nice food, lovely beer garden, but dear God they need to sort the customer service out. Customers were standing 3 or 4 deep at the bar being served by a guy on his first night while the 3 experienced staff wandered around the garden collecting glasses and looking for tips by doing table service. Even when they were doing that they were slow and frequently wrong with the order.

It's a lovely place, but my whole group agreed that we wouldn't be coming back unless something changes.

This pub has a great outside area with plenty of heating and could so easily be wonderful. Sadly it is horribly let down by the food and the incredibly rude manager.

We were there recently for lunch and although it was full of suits it could have been good. However they got the meals badly wrong. Chicken breast with rarebit turned out to be melted cheese on chicken. The vegetarian with us order Welsh Rarebit and initially got a beef sandwich. After sending it back she got a chicken sandwich with melted cheese and then finally after a long delay we got the sandwich back again without the chicken.

When we talked to the manager the distinct impression he was trying to give was that it was our fault, we shouldn't be so fussy and anyway we should be grateful for the opportunity to be in his pub. Some (1) of the staff are friendly but unless you enjoy being in an episode of Fawlty Towers you should avoid.

I've got to disagree with the negative comments about the Wednesday night pub quiz. I love a good quiz and I've been to many different ones across London, however this is by far the best organised. The questions are about the right level of difficulty, it doesn't start too late and it doesn't drag on for too long. It's not weighted heavily towards any particular subject and the quizmaster manages to keep the crowd under relative control. Anyone who can't handle a little swearing in a pub obviously takes themselves far too seriously and deserves to have their ego punctured by some barbed comments.

Overall the Rye Hotel is one of my favourite pubs. The beer is good, the staff are friendly and the garden is brilliant in the summer. My only criticism is that it has become something of a victim of it's own success. It can get amazingly busy on weekend afternoons, especially during the summer.
