The Old Bell Tavern, Harrogate
Expensive? Where (and what) do you people normally drink?
It's mostly real ale and prices are around 2.40 a pint. Only expensive if you normally like a Tesco Value Lager on your sofa or were last out drinking in 1998 in a CIU or Student Union.

An unlikely spot for all-in knife fighting, but clearly exerts some strange attraction for the chav flying columns.

The Imperial Arms, Chislehurst
Has been very smelly since the smoking ban. Suspect the carpets need a steam clean!
In general it's a bit dishevelled and could be a lot nicer. On the positive side, the beer is not greedily priced and the landlord seems like a decent bloke.

Small, odd - yet strangely characterless.
Neither a traditional pub nor a decent bar, it is remniscent of the sort of crappy bar that are fairly common in those parts of continental Europe where they're not very interested in beer or going out.

Now re-opened as a tapas bar called...wait for it...Tapastry, ba-boom ching!

The East Dulwich Tavern (EDT), Dulwich
I just voted "10", not because it is a 10 but because currently this is quite unkindly and inaccurately rated as the worst pub in East Dulwich, and it's not as if there isn't some stiff competition for the title. Hence I thought I would make a small contribution to raising the average.
This is where it all started in East Dulwich when all you c***s where still living in Clapham or wherever you came from. In fact, before then, when you were all still at "uni".

Nonsense. Youngish crowd but 18/20 more accurate - now that couldn't possibly have something to do with colleges in the area could it?
Ee-aww!

Last time I tried to go they wouldn't let me in because I was wearing trainers (and not the herbert variety). Funny that, because I thought I was in London and not in Basingstoke. Says it all really; not been back.

Initially was not over keen on the decor - esp. at the front - but probably the best totty in SE22, including a rather sweet but not paticularly competent barmaid!

Pub or Flower Show? Single-handedly keeps Peckham ye in Bloom.
Decent pub though.

The Dulwich Woodhouse, Sydenham
Pub has a good setting and is Youngs so good beer in my book.
Was put off returning for food after the worst pub food I have ever had. This was 2-3 years ago. Can anyone confirm whether it has since improved?

Young, chavvy crowd. Look like it was decorated by Linda Barker on a special episode of some TV show but on a Bank Holiday monday when only IKEA was open.
For all that, it's not a bad place. It used to be a proper sh1thole. The pizzas are good - prepared fresh in front of you - and even better value when 2-for-1 (Monday or Tuesday??).
You can also clean up in the quiz - my last visit proved highly profitable.

Boozer that ticks most of the boxes. Down to earth, Millwall type of place.

The Dartmouth Arms, Forest Hill
Decent pub. The most respectable option in Forest Hill.

An imaginatively run and rather "individual" establishment that is quite unlike anywhere else you will have been.
Is a bit hit-and-miss; Saturday night could see only a smattering of people or there could be a fairly riotous party, like the last night before Prohibition, so the atmosphere can reach either end of the scale.
Friendly and unthreatening. The bouncers are very pleasant chaps, although I wouldn't care to test them.

If people think this place is yobbish they should try some other pubs in the wider area, to give some perspective.
Friendly and pleasant enough. Did have a delightful barmaid but not seen her recently. No decent lagers, just Stella or cooking lager.

Hopeless layout - literally nowhere to plonk yourself early on if not eating. Think standing in narrow hallway outside loo at a party. Space all wrong, which tends to spoil the place. Has potential though; just a shame it seems to be owned or run by someone who doesn't really know what they are doing in this department.

Now closed, apparently was up for sale but sale fell through. No news as to date of re-opening as yet.

In an umpromising area, this bar is quite a surprise. I've not seen how lively it gets on weekends, but on a weeknight visit was quite impressed.
A lot of effort has been made with the fit-out and decor and the place gives the impression of being owened by someone who has half an idea what they are doing, unlike one or two other places not in the same postcode but not a million miles away (naming no names).
Drinks were quite reasonably priced and food was in London terms quite cheap at I think 8-9 for the most expensive main course. I didn't try any though.
Would definitely recommend a visit. Perhaps not worth a trip across town but for those in SE4/23/13 and worse still points further east there is not exactly much competition in the area, so make sure you check it out.

The Grove Inn, Huddersfield
Fine pub. Huge beer selection, reasonably priced. A bit scruffy- while not in the sticky carpet and crappy old horse brass type of way, shabby chic would be stretching it a bit.
