Red Lion, Martlesham

I really love it here. We discovered the pub about a year ago and go monthly now. The portions are fairly small, but ample for us. There is plenty of choice and I have never had a bad meal. I adore the chips too. I have eaten chips in many pubs, and none are as nice as the chips in the Red Lion. Always book on a weekend as they do get really busy.

The Fox Inn, Newbourn

This pub is fantastic. I went last week for the first time and i would recommend it to anyone.

The pub itself is beautiful, and inside its very old fashioned with candles all over the place including on each table. It made it feel very cosy.

The only downside are the toilet which are very basic, but they are in the process of having them re-done at the moment.

My husband ordered the sirloin steak which is one of the most expensive things on the menu ... but it was worth every penny. I had the hamburger which came with homemade coleslaw, salad, chips, bacon and cheese. It was to die for.

All the meat comes from Five Winds in Melton, so you know the meat is going to be five star.

I cant wait to go back again, and i have a feeling it might become a regular treat for us.

The Crown, Ufford

This pub has recently been taken over, and i really wasnt impressed. You wouldn't have known that the landlady was the landlady as she was eating at the bar wearing an outfit i wouldnt garden in !

My husband and I ordered the homemade steak and ale pie with chips and veg. We were asked if we would like side order of gravy with it .... which we turned down. Big mistake. I assumed the pie would have gravy inside it.

The pie turned up looking like a lump of pasty. Inside the totally encased pie was about 5 pieces of chewy meat. No gravy was in the pie and the pasty was inedible. Everything was so piping hot it really felt like it had been microwaved.

The chips were hard and the veg consisted of a bit of over done cabbage.

I then tried to order the lemon tart and then the apple crumble off the 'specials' board only for them to be sold out (we were the only people eating at the time, and it was about 7pm). So, i had the banana split. It consisted of a cut banana, two scoops of cheap ice cream and a wafer. Yours for 4.50 !!!

It really was terrible, and i wont be going back. The seating in the bar area was massively uncomfortable and it was a horrid waste of time and money.

Quart Pot, Runwell

My only comment would be how early they stop taking food orders. I cant remember the exact time now, but it was something like 8pm !! On a Saturday this is ridiculous.

I remember going there with my parents on a Saturday night - and its a lovely quaint pub which does fill up early. We got there at about 7:45pm, took a while getting a table, went to order to food only to be told they had stopped cooking. Its silly on the busiest night of the week.

We ended up going elsewhere.

The Oyster Inn, Butley

Alexbell - you will be glad to know that the landlord you mentioned doesn't work at the pub now (and hasnt for nearly 2 years). He could be a tad obnoxious when the beers had been flowing - and like you, i didnt particularly take to him.

Now though the landlord is a Suffolk born and bred fella, who will do his utmost to make everyone feel welcome.

Oh - and incidentally, there is a house wine now - and very drinkable it is too.

The Oyster Inn, Butley

I dont know where the 1st poster ate / drank but it certainly wasnt the Oyster in Butley as i dont recognise his description at all. I have been going to the Oyster for about 2 years now, and although we were 'visitors' to the area we were welcomed with open arms. In fact, we loved it so much we moved very close by, and now drink / eat at the pub a few times a week.
We have never had a bad meal there, and Steve, Viv and the regulars make it very enjoyable to spend your evenings there. I dont think ive laughed as much or as often as i have in the last few years.
Keep it up guys, you deserve a 10/10 for the quality and service you have given over the years.
Cheers :-)
