| 7 of us went to the Martins Arms on Sat eve for a meal and were sadly disappointed. It wasn't very clear at the beginning whether we had a table in the restaurant or in the bar even though we had booked a table in the restaurant. We ordered 2 bottles of wine (white and rose) - it was luke warm when we got it and it was of the screw top variety but it wasn't cheap! The waiter didn't enable us to taste the wine, he just poured it straight out. The food was good but when it came to coffee/ tea at the end the waiter just said as he passed our table "coffee?" and took our response to be that all 7 of us wanted straight coffees. When we flagged this wasn't quite what we had in mind and knowing there was a coffee/tea part to the menu we still didn't get given the menu so we could choose what we wanted. I asked for some herbal tea and the waitress who took this request said that a colleage would be back to take my order. What I actually got was a pot of vanilla tea brought straight over to me - no listing of tea options was offered and they just brought out the 1 herbal tea they had and presumed I wanted that! When I commented on this the waitress was noticeably peeved - anyone would have thought that I wasn't the customer! When the bill arrived it didn't include much detail and it was difficult to know if it was accurate. | This pub is in a beautiful setting and I spent a very pleasant afternoon with colleagues sitting in the garden. The service, however, was slow in spite of everything having been pre-ordered and the landlord (an Italian) has to be the rudest publican I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. When I arrived at 12 noon to meet up with colleagues I found the front door locked. I saw that someone was working in the garden and asked him when the pub opened. He looked at his watch and said that I could go through the garden into the pub as it was already 12 noon. Once inside and looking to see if my colleagues had already arrived I was told in a very aggressive manner by the landlord to leave as they didn't open until 12. When I said that it was already past 12 and that I'd been told by one of his employees that I could enter the pub, he shouted out to the gardener to shut the gate and not allow anyone in. What a rude man! Definitely a place to avoid. Why should people like this expect to enjoy the patronage of the public when they feel it�s OK to be so rude to their customers. 111999 - 3 Jul 2010 23:36 |

| Lovely country pub that serves near restaurant quality food. The interior of this place just oozes class and rural charm. It's almost like stepping back in time. The only trouble is, the prices are near restaurant quality too. Expect to pay �3 plus for a pint of real-ale. I love the pub and the surroundings, but I couldn't afford to drink/eat here regularly. | A great English pub! Good ales, great food - welcoming bar staff. Just what we wanted - a place to take friends and family after a good walk with the dog or a restaurant meal. Cosy in the winter by the fire, glorious garden in the summer. A gem! blacksheepale - 7 Oct 2008 09:40 |
