ONCE NOT A BAD PLACE FOR A QUICK PINT DURING AND AFTER THE FLOWER MARKET, THE PUB HA SEEMINGLY CRAWLED UP IT'S OWN SHOREDITCH-HOXTON-Y,GASTRO-WANNABE BACK-SIDE !! FOOD MENU PRESENTS WELL...BUT, AT 7.00 FOR A "NEAL'S YARD" CHEESE PLATTER WHERE A MOUSE WOULD BE FOUND WANTING FOR ACTUAL CHEESE IS APPALLING AND DEMEANING TO "NEAL'S YARD", WHO MIGHT WANT ONE TO TASTE SOME "CHEESE"!!! GET IT TOGETHER,PUB !! I CAN GET MORE CHEESE FREE AT NEAL'S JUST CHECKING OUT THE SAMPLES !! HOBBIT - 15 Aug 2010 17:54 |
An oddly conflicted place, on the one hand trying to be a slick gastro pub while also attempting a more jaded, Shoreditch chic. Bad stuff: - Hand pull frequently runs out reducing the options to lager or lager. - It's not cheap, food & drink is standard price for "nice" pubs in the area. - Can be very busy on Sunday mornings & weekend evenings - Staff are a bit hit & miss; the mainly female bar staff can be familiar & efficient one day and "difficult" the next. Good stuff: - The beer is good if you can get it, though the pumps don't vary what's on offer very often. - The food is good, the menu changes month to month & the variety of charcuterie & novelty bar snacks (giant scotch eggs etc) is a nice touch - It's a really nice pub i.e. an attractive well laid out bar, small, leafy back yard, clean, has decent furniture, panelled walls etc... - Selection of wines & spirits is up to the pub's gastro aspirations. - Good atmosphere. Weeknights are busy enough for atmosphere but eating in the bar is still comfortable & most seats will be full by 10pm. Weekend evenings can be hectic, but the atmosphere is still first rate; this place attracts a mixed group, but is far enough from central Shoreditch to avoid the "up to town" crowd. Trying to place itself in the "gastro" pub category judging by the chalked menus, actually very chilled and friendly but..... lets itself down big time with a thoroughly mediocre and uninspiring selection of beers and ciders. A couple of well kept real ales (the landlord was crap on this visit) a proper imported lager/wheat beer ? Real Cider rather global pith like magners... Plenty of similar pubs in london get it right, shame this one doesnt. moclips2002 - 7 Aug 2010 11:12 |
Quite busy for a Tuesday night but over 7 for two pints and the worst stench of piss from the toilets I have ever had the misfortune to experience. jimd - 19 May 2010 09:11 |
