Visited during a road trip with a university friend in 2004. Large, empty place on a dull afternoon - but the wood panels from the ocean liner make this worth a stop. I was drawn here by the notion of it being a brewpub, but none of the brewpub's beers were available. Has character. Worth a stop. Will try again this week on the way down to Swansea. Home of Carter's Beers, although not being brewed when I visited, the two guest beers where both imaginative and well kept. Asking when the house beers where brewed appeared to confuse the barmaid. Still, worth the visit just to get lost in this rambling building. Jimbo Smith - 7 May 2004 20:58 |
Just on the border with Gwent but nonetheless still in Mid Glam, this pub is off the main Newport-Caerphilly road on the other side of a disused railway embankment. A quiet pub, no juke box, an unobtrusive games machine in corridor. Up to 4 separate drinking/eating areas but not all in use at the same time. An on-site brewery is not presently being used in the absence of a brewer. Pub is wood panelled, the panels coming from an ocean going ship that was cut up at Newport. Good food, an interesting range of Real Ales, rare for the area. B&B available. Sizeable car park. Tel 01633 441025. Licensees Alan and Liz. Brian Francis - 6 Apr 2004 20:57 |
