| Stockport's Wellington Road looks like a good road for a pub crawl. If doing that, the Hope is as good a place to start as any. This 2 room pub is home to the Fool Hardy brewery. Ales from them were Reckless, Roushou, Random, Risky & Rannygazou. The latter was a plum porter and it was also my favourite beer of the day. Guest ales were Grafton Zombie Heart, Elgood's Puff & Salopian False Flag. The cider was Broadoak Moonshine. Another 8/10 from me for this pub. blue_scrumpy - 30 Oct 2018 21:26 |
| This pub has a lounge-public bar type split. Ironically the door which says lounge is more of the public bar side (but then again, the other door says "Vault", not public bar). I sat in both sides and I preferred the lounge bar much more as it had a cosier atmosphere whereas the vault felt a bit colder and more sterile. I believe they were serving about 11 real ales when I was in, there keg selection is also not the standard selection. This pub also has a microbrewery in their cellar, and at least half of the beers they sell are from tbe microbrewery, called 'Fool Hardy' brewery. I had a pint of the Fool Hardy Ragging, a porter with a bourbon taste to it, it was quite nice and the bourbon flavour wasn't too strong or over powering. I really rated this place, the magnet doesn't have as cosy a feel to it as this does. I'd probably say it's a toss up between this, The Crown and The Railway on Avenue Street, opposite the Peel Centre, for best pub in the town. Wezzielad - 20 Jan 2018 14:03 |

| The first pub I visited (out of 4 on my list) on the main road to Manchester – and the furthest from the centre. The first thing to note that it is at the top of a steep hill, so you’ll need a drink by the time you get there ! Substantial brick building advertising “Hardy’s Ales” – which I assume is their own Fool Hardy brewery. The main entranceway immediately leads to two doors. To the left is the “continental beer bar” and to the right the “real ale bar”. Be careful which you choose – there is no way to get between the two without coming outside again ! [ For those desperate, the gents is easier to reach via the real ale bar ! ] Both rooms are open plan, with various types of seating. The actual bar in the real ale room features ceramic tiles set into its wooden structure. There were 9 or 10 beers available, of which 4 were their own. For some reason all their beers begin with “R” – they also seemed very much alike from the descriptions given. I tried the Ravenous Romp, which was reasonable, but nothing special. 7/10 – worth the walk, but only just. Martinsh - 8 Feb 2015 19:08 |
