This pub is hidden away in a side street, in a slightly unassuming location. Nevertheless, it was reasonably busy on my early Friday evening visit. The cricket was on the TV and most locals were either congregated around the bar, or in the garden at the rear. HPA is the regular ale here. The guest ale was Golden Glow. I ordered a pork and stuffing cob to go with my HPA, whilst keeping a close eye on the bus times! blue_scrumpy - 25 Aug 2019 19:59 |
Now is probably not the best time to review this pub because nearby roadworks are having an effect on trade, but hopefully they will be finished soon. There are a lot of pubs like this around the Black Country, backstreet locals that were once part of the Banks's estate and ticked over because of the brand loyalty that inexorably surrounded this most average of beers. Then the world changed and pubs started closing down, or rather they had to evolve or die. Many of them went under, blaming the government, the smoking ban or supermarkets. Some, like this, survive. Sitting there with a pint of well-kept Exmoor Gold, talking as though I was a regular to the woman behind the bar I'd met for the first time 15 minutes ago, I knew why this place does well. Not far away I daresay another similar pub, with filthy seats, insanitary toilets, smoothflow on tap and a TV blaring away has a surly landlord behind the bar moaning about how he's being driven out of business by the governmment, smoking ban, supermarkets.... djw - 31 Aug 2013 23:03 |
