A very easy going place which goes a lot further back inside than expected. The outside and front of the cafe are more typically of a continental bar design. There's even an ice cream dispenser just inside the door! The further you venture into the place the darker it gets and the decor becomes very eclectic. The paintings on the walls are from local artists and can be purchased. The furniture is varied with a mix of styles. The whole place has a friendly laid back feel to it. There is a stage over to the left. A jazz saxophonist (who else!) was creating a nice ambience to the place the last time I was here. The beers are mainly Belgian (duh) and there is a folder listing all the various types, Trappist, Abbey etc. Not all of them are available at any one time but there is always massive choice. Check out the bottles behind the bar! The drinks are not cheap but seeing as many of the beers are in the 7%+ bracket most people won't be necking them back anyway! It's not the sort of place to suit everyone's taste but if someone asked for a definition of "bohemian" I would point them in the direction of the Belgian Cafe outtamehead - 4 Jun 2014 12:33 |
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, Belgian beers on draught and moules, my wife thought she had gone to heaven. OK not the cheapest but the food portions are good and the staff welcoming. Friends tell me the Sunday lunches are great. Dog friendly. dandj - 18 May 2014 18:07 |
Crikey this place needs a lick of paint. It looks run down from the outside. One pint of Belgian beer was £7.20 but a pint of Leffe Blonde was a bit cheaper. The fish stew was really excellent, packed full of fish & mussels, and reminded us of why we always visit the Belgian Bar when we arrive in Ramsgate. Please though......do tidy the place up. Good selection of Belgian beers and a fair selection of bottle ales, Shepherd Neame mainly. Can truly be described as quirky with a genuine pub atmosphere. We came here late in the evening so didn't eat.A mixed age group and very pleasant time here. Recommended! stemginger - 26 Sep 2012 09:13 |
Can be a very laid back, culturally entertaining cosmopolitan sort of place, with an interesting menu and selection of beers. It can also be a dank, grubby joint with the atmosphere of a forgotten room. In fact, the grubbiness has almost been a constant for me, and the further into the place one ventures, the grubbier it seems to get. Maybe the increasingly dim lighting hinders good housekeeping. The toilets were pretty scuzzy, too. Anyway, the beer is as one would expect, although not always the prices. The food out front can look appetizing, but I once watched a mate scoffing a Sunday roast that almost evolved into something with flippers to stop it drowning in the over-abundance of gravy. Eclectic and erratic. And a position in the front is probably best. Or alfresco is weather allows. Codrotten - 25 Oct 2011 20:43 |
