I am a down to earth out going person with a family but I URGENTLY DONT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO TO THIS PUB!!!
For the following reasons ;
*not welcoming
*tastless ales
*when I was parked in the car park, the owner question why I was parked there. Did not give me change to expline
*barricaded myself and daughter in car park!
*very cliquey pub if you are not a local you will be made to feel segregated
*i stated I was using the telescope on car park and received abuse
*very uncomfortable feel inside
*not family welcoming

Excellent pub with one hell of a view west toward Wales. A great range of ales. Bit disappointed to find no food on our weekday visit which sadly meant our visit was limited. Only one beer gripe was my wife is particular about her ales and asked for a tiny sample of one. The request was declined and an offer of a 1/3rd pint at suitable price was offered. We declined this and consulted the Good Beer Guide notes for the beer and decided it should be fine. We only needed even a lick of the beer to know if was to her taste. Never come across this policy but it wouldn't stop us going back.

A wonderful pub, but like many of Stafforshire's rural gems it seems to be ignored by the rest of the country. Foremost, the beer (an Acorn porter) was my beer of the year so far, despite a worrying number of handpumps in a remote pub.

The staff are friendly, the food is secondary but cheap, and the views are fantastic (you're in the bit near Stoke that looks glorious as you charge down the M6). I love the electronic display of beers too - bit like the Wellington but cheaper.

One warning - don't take the short cut between Chesterton and Alsagers Bank if of a nervous disposition (unless in a 4x4). And no entry after 11pm either !

The Gresley Arms has sat proudly at the top of Alsagers Bank for over 200 years with fantastic views from the Beer Garden and in the dining rooms. In the near distance Bateswood Country Park perfect for walking, bike or horse riding with a beautiful lake and nature reserve. Further afield to the left the Shropshire Hills including The Long Mynd and The Wrekin to the right is Runcorn Power Station and Liverpools two Cathedrals ( it is said on a clear day with good binoculars you can see Blackpool Tower ) look straight ahead beyond the castles of Beeston and Peckforton to The Berwyn Mountains,Exclusham Mountains Llangollen and beyond.Of course there's a lot in between and the resident telescope is a great help.
If walking is your thing The Gresley Arms sits between Bateswood and Apedale country parks Bateswood is fairly flat so ideal for a leisurely stroll, Apedale Country Park has more challenging signposted walks through the woods it also has a mining museum and visitors centre, we welcome walkers, dogs and children looking for refresments after a long walk.
Our Philosophy is simple, we serve quality drinks specialising in Cask Ale at a fair price in a friendly atmosphere with a real fire in the winter and fantastic beer garden in the summer, food is available, again at a fair price including our famous 3 course Sunday Lunch for just 6.95 and our dining room has the best views in Staffordhire.
Our Pub has four individual rooms, a traditional Bar with slate floor and real fire, old pictures showing the history of the area adorn the walls. A comfortable lounge perfect for conversation and our newly refurbished bottom room home to a monthly folk night. The dining room feel a special place to eat with comfortable surroundings and fantastic views and coming soon our brand new 'Room with a View, a dining/function room with picture windows and a veranda.

I'm not sure why this pub has such a low rating. This was my first and best pub of the day on my Boxing Day Potteries tour. 8 real ales were on, alongside 4 real ciders and perries. Atlas Latitude Pilsner, Peakstone Chained Oak, Titanic Stout, Wychwood Bah Humbug, Townhouse Flowerdew, Marstons Pedigree, Lymestone Foundation Stone and Oakham Citra were the beers. Gwynt y Draig Fiery Fox & Two Trees Perry, Westons Bounds Scrumpy and Thatchers Cheddar Valley were the ciders and perry. Whilst the pub doesn't promising outside, it was very welcoming inside with a coal fire helping to keep everybody warm with temperatures of -6C outside. There is a public bar to the right on entry, with another sunken room further to the right. To the left is a lounge. The bar featured pictures of the local area. Certainly the best selection of drinks I found in the Potteries pub I visited.
