A group of 8 of us ladies visited at the weekend - a reasonably large group but not massive (and we were well behaved!). We had a very disappointing experience. Our food was brought to the table a bit at a time and there was no apology or explanation and no smiling either. First two plates of lamb were delivered (but no veg), then quite a bit of time later, two more meals were brought out (including one with fries), then later one more was brought out (but no fries that had been ordered even though these must have been cooked at the same time as the other order), meanwhile the original two people were still waiting for their veg and so on and so on. It must have taken 15-20 minutes before all the dishes were eventually served. I've never experienced anything like it. The food was excellent but because of the above we will not be returning. sylviajoan - 14 Mar 2016 17:24 |
A large group of us stayed in the village at the Manor for my birthday and we ate twice at the Ilchester Arms during our stay. On the first evening there were 17 of us on the second 12. On both occasions the quality of the food was excellent and the service was delivered with military precision despite chaos of such a large group. We ate from the standard menu and it is a credit to the chef to be able to deliver each course at the same time for everyone and cooked to perfection, especially as we had made no booking on the second night. The steaks were of excellent quality, the stews were luscious, the crab devine. Only criticism was a lack of vegetarian choice. Everyone who dined with us agreed, without exception. Drinks at the bar were perhaps on the high side as the grumblers below suggest, but who cares? If it takes slightly higher beer prices to keep a village pub like this in rude health I think that is completely acceptable. The wines by the bottle were very reasonably priced. The Ilchester Arms beats many of the top gastropubs Ive been to - worth a detour. Derby_st - 13 Aug 2010 11:08 |
Popped in for a quick drink after a long walk. Paid 5.35 for a pint of Oj & soda, and half a strongbow. I questioned the bar person and they siad it was correct!!!!! Apparently small oj (baby) 1.80 soda 1.65 (spash) half strongbow 1.90. What sort of pub charges 3.35 for Pint of OJ and soda. WHAT A RIP OFF. adam6038 - 7 Jun 2010 16:57 |
This is a very old building, quite dark inside, but with loads of character. Whenever I have visited for a pint I've found the choice of beers very disappointing. For example today only 2 beers were on offer apparently due to maintenance works being carried out. I haven't eaten there so cannot comment on the food. The pub is in a very high profile tourist area but doesn't seem to capitalise on this - I suppose the high numbers of tourists ensures a living for the landlord in any event, but it seems to me things could be vastly improved. classic0904 - 20 May 2010 19:35 |
