We popped in to here in order to shelter from a rainshower and it proved to be a reasonably convivial student/young professional dive. I enjoyed a half of Butcombe - an always welcome beverage. Much emphasis on the egg chasing but as it's the West Country, I'll let them off I suppose.

A good-sized pub, which although popular with students has a much more traditional pub feel to it than many of the trendy bars on nearby Park Street.

There are several different areas to the pub separated by partitioning, and on a few different levels. Theres a comfy corner with a few old leather sofas, and even a small bar downstairs although this never seems to get much use. I think at one time the pool table was down here, but its now at the front of the main bar. There is also a garden area which keeps the smokers happy.

Each table had a lighted candle on it which created a pleasant ambience and although there was a large plasma on the wall this had the sound turned off. There was a short menu chalked up on a board, consisting of pub staples such as Scampi & Chips, Bangers & mash, etc., and a selection of baguettes and light bites.

Beers on tap were Jem, Doom Bar and Teignworthy Gun Dog. Ciders were a slightly disappointing Scrumpy Jack, Bulmers and Symonds Founders Reserve.

Popular pub on two floors and a small garden area. Several different areas with plenty of tables and a few sofa's. Good sized bar with Doom Bar, Deuchar's IPA and Butcombe on tap, plus Blackthorn, Strongbow & Stonehouse cider's.

Comfy looking , but also a pub that always looks a bit cluttered , you know like the front room , oh weve got nowhere else to put it so lets put it in there , your almost frightened your going to fall over something. . beers d/bar l/pride d/bar butcombe , deuchars , my two pints were cold . 4/10

Recently had a refurb and has managed to lose all of its historical character - light wooden floors, booths gone in place of comfy leather seats, swirly carpeted bit etc. And the top of the beautiful old bar has gone. A real shame.

That said, the Doombar and Deuchars IPA were very good and reasonably priced and there is now a decent looking menu of pub food and Portuguese snacks (Portuguese chef).
