Friendly village pub offering food that is better than a lot of the so called gastro-pubs there are around. The menu seems to gravitate fairly strongly towards fresh fish and every-time I've tried it, it has been excellent. The sunday roast is equally good, though you may want to fast for a day beforehand :o) I've tried all the varieties of ale they sell and am happy to report that all are kept in good condition. The staff on the most part are welcoming and helpful. The regulars can sometimes be a little loud in the evening, but then again, this is a village pub and it is hubs like this that preserve village communities. It is in a nice enough location, but as stated by rpadam, the beer garden out the back is a real treat. If you hit it on a quiet summers day, you can while away the afternoon in serenity with fabulous views over epping forest and london. I've been back a few times and will keep doing so whilst the formula stays like it is. justonelasthalfplease - 13 Dec 2011 09:44 |
Pleasant village pub attracts locals (including one of the few darts teams around) and which is strong on food; although it's layout is not really suitable for both. There is a nice pub atmosphere, the staff are friendly and the beers well looked after. The dining area is not very attractive, quite dark and gloomy, but the quality of food makes up for the lack of ambience, and you can eat outside if weather permits. Sunday lunch is standard pub roast, and sometimes they cram people in so that it's uncomfortably crowded and noisy; especially when the bar customers are watching sport on TV ! Visit on weekdays and the menu is more varied, from typical pub meals to some more exotic offerings. The quality and presentation are excellent, and the highish prices well justified. Downsides: the toilets could do with some TLC, and you have to walk through the bar (sometimes busy) to get to them. They make a surcharge if you pay by credit card. And; it seems that it can't decide if it's a village pub or a restaurant. Jimdee - 26 Aug 2010 18:04 |
Visited on a warm Saturday night for a couple of pints (McMullens AK and a guest beer) which were very nice. Pleasant hill top location on busy B road. Pub not busy on my visit. Sat outside to take advantage of the good weather so can't comment too much on interior. Bar staff welcoming. Would like to visit again and probably will when next in area davewat - 11 Jul 2010 19:17 |
Decent village pub, with some wooden tables out front but go round the side to the beer garden at the back which his surprisingly good views. Three McMullen beers, including a nicepint of Cask. (NB - Review dates from August 2009 before pub was listed on BITE.) rpadam - 21 Mar 2010 18:51 |
