| We stayed nearby recently and popped in. Just as described below. The elderly lady that runs it was very poorly apparently and so her nephew was manning the bar. Only the tiny room at the back was open and we stood and drank and chatted with the various locals that dropped in. | Fascinating pub that offers 1950's time travel in a very good way. Completely unspoilt by the usual refurbishment. No food but more importantly a friendly welcome by the landlady and locals and very well-kept Marston's Burton Bitter and Adnams Bitter. Only evenings (late) and Sunday lunchtimes. | Cracking boozer.Just like many pubs in Derbyshire used to be 30years ago until they have either closed down or gone for the up market foodies.The small bar has a fire burning which makes it cosy and the locals that use the pub are very friendly.Also has a larger room and a snug.They had two proper beers on pump,Adnams bitter and Marstons Burton bitter.The Marstons was good,(although I think Marstons beer has gone downhill since being taken over.It always seems to have a twang with it.),but the Adnams was superb.Didnt want to leave such lovely beer.Good selection of crisps,nuts etc.They stock bags of nuts and raisens!Havnt seen them in a pub for years.Well worth a visit but,as previous post stated,only open in late evening or Sunday lunchtime. peon - 5 Oct 2009 16:24 |
| On the CAMRA National Inventory, this stunning time-warp is certainly worthy of the fairly lengthy detour required to get to this remote village with stunning views across the Derbyshire Peak District. Word of warning, though. They are only open between 8.30pm-midnight every day, plus Sunday lunchtime, and 8.30 isn't necessarily prompt. Directly opposite the church, plain stone exterior with the pub name over the door. The entrance leads to a corridor with rooms left and right, the one on the right looking for all the world like a railway waiting room from the 1920s. The room on the left is smaller, but does have a pool table for the village youngsters and a serving hatch to the rear of the bar. The tap-room is beyond the pool room, but also with a serving hatch to the corridor. Low ceiling, huge fireplace, tiled floor, wooden panelling and just two tables join to create a very intimate den for the exceptionally friendly locals to while away the evening. Mary the landlady is a lady of, er, some advanced years, but keeps very good ale - Marstons' Burton Bitter and Adnams on this occasion. No till as such, just a drawer with coin compartments. Up two steps and out the back are the primitive toilets, housed in a completely separate bit across a small courtyard. All in all, an exceptional experience. Gristy - 26 Jun 2009 16:20 |
