The pub seemed a bit out of the way, but plenty of people were walking past outside! It's a fine building, with plenty of space and a beer garden. When we arrived, a huge alsatian started barking at us and ran across, but he was only being friendly! The landlord looked hard as nails, but hewas friendly too. I don't know what's happened here in the past, but the walls were adorned with posters warning of dire consequences for all sorts of infringements! A blackboard promised that bar food was coming soon. The Marston's Burton bitter was very acceptable. This pub could be superb, if the brewery knew what market they wanted to cater for. At the moment though, it's just OK. lutefisk - 22 Mar 2010 10:33 |
This pub now has a new tenant and they are giving it a real go. DJ and karaoke on Friday, live bands on Saturday and a poker night during the week. They now do food all day from 9 a.m. I called in on Friday and the music was blasting out playing to a crowd of one, me. The lights were out and flashing strobe lights etc were on the go. Im not sure that this is what is needed in a pub that is a bit off the beaten track even in the town centre, but well see. Still only had Marstons Bitter on handpump, it was OK though. Going through some hard times at the moment with several short term relief managers recently. It should really do better than it does as its a nice pub. Currently awaiting yet another mug to lease it and give it a go. The brewery Banks (Marstons) arent helping, the relief manager used to sell two cask ales Banks bitter and Jennings Cockahoop, trade dropped off which meant that he could only stock one ale. The best seller was Cockahoop, so with stunning ineptitude the brewery insisted that he sell Bankss alone. The relief is being paid a percentage of the wet sales so you can understand why hes not happy. Hello Marstons, real world calling, anybody in? ROBCamra - 16 Jun 2009 10:31 |
