| First visit for years. I was invited to a meal. Food was fine. I took advantage of an early evening 'fixed price' deal. Ale was less good. Doombar and Wainwright were the only ales on offer. I had a warm pint of Wainwright. The place was occupied by a few very quiet diners and pleasant, attentive staff. Definitely a restaurant and not a pub. wirraldrinker - 29 Mar 2017 10:36 |
| The Anchor Inn has changed from a Mitchells & Butlers 'Ember Inn' to a Mitchells & Butlers 'Village Pub & Kitchen'. Have a look at the MBPLC.com to see their long list of 'brands and formats'. In effect it is now a restaurant that also sells ale. Much more expensive than it was. I walked in recently and straight out again. Every table was set for meals and nobody was drinking at the bar. | I'm beginning to like "Ember Inns". They try to be all things to everyone, & on the whole they seem to be getting it right. The Anchor is one of those pubs that has been given a classy 21st century makeover by this PubCo. Situated on a main road this pub looks tiny from the outside. Once inside it opens up into a very interesting maze & variety of seating options. Gastro pub set up but pleasant enough to enjoy just a drink. Clean & bright there were 3 handpumps on my recent visit although only 2 were in operation. I had a pint of well kept Ryedale Best. | When I were a lad this old pub had several small, dark, dingy rooms......thankfully nowadays it is one large room and is much more welcoming. An old pub with a modern interior. Popular. Reasonably priced pub-chain (Ember Inns) food. Good selection of beers including a real ale. Nice area on the 'roadside� of the pub where drinkers can get away from those eating meals.
