The last of the 4 pubs I had to tick in Accrington and this is the pub I finished up in. The Abbey is a minutes walk from Grants in a side street and is a very different pub, this one is very much a locals pub and somewhere that you instantly feel welcome as you enter as a stranger like I did. As you enter from the street you are faced with the bar that serves 2 separate rooms with a total of 6 pumps across the 2 sides. 3 cask ales on these pumps so I went for Moorhouses Pride of Pendle @ 4.1%. I've had this beer before and its always good, these pints were no different. I stayed for a couple of hours as I was plotted up at the bar and the enjoying the music coming from the juke box playing in the back bar. The place was pretty busy and with the music it was like a party…good group of punters and plenty of Northern banter. Unsure why this pub didn’t make the 2014 GBG as it’s beer is every bit as good as the other 3 pubs I visited but the selection was not quite so vast. Again another great pub, that’s at least 3 in Accrington. lezford - 22 Dec 2014 15:43 |
Agree with both of the previous reviewers. There are a few ales on here. But they are all beers that are found nationwide - Sharps Doom Bar, Black Sheep Best Bitter, Holts Bitter, Jennings Bitter, Tetleys Cask & John Smiths Cask. This seems to be a community local in the centre of Accrington and is probably the closest Accrington gets to a nightlife. Most other pubs nearby appeared to have closed down. It still deserves some merit for at least stocking real ales. blue_scrumpy - 18 Jul 2013 21:13 |
Like Snarling Mallard, I was disappointed with the beer selection here - all national brews like London Pride and Doombar. If I'm in Lancashire, I want to drink local beer, not stuff I can get at home, and there wasn't any. So friendly enough, but not worth a detour. paul154 - 10 Sep 2012 16:39 |
Fairly average backstreet pub near to the town centre. Was a little disappointed with the 'London' ale selection of Youngs and Courage Best although the Youngs was drinkable. Very freindly staff and cleintelle, although Accy is quite a friendly place. anonymous - 27 Oct 2011 16:19 |
