December has got to be a hard time to open a new pub, particularly in the current economic climate. I never went to this pub before it changed (not really my scene!) but i know that it was an iconic gay pub so that will surely make this an even more challenging venture. That said i know a few of the pubs that these guys run and they are all quality boozers, many of them with very good dining rooms, so i have no doubt this one will come good. (one criticism, they are all satrting to look a bit samey) I went to the opening night, had a great time and came home with wet paint on the back of my jacket! Work brings me into the area from time to time so i've been in a couple of times since. To be honest it has been a bit quiet . Lacking a bit of atmosphere but certainly not soul less. Good muisc and looks great but it's a big old gaff so needs a few more bodies to inject that final ingredient. I think that once word gets out that will happen, but like i said the time of year, economic climate and history of the pub wont help much. I like it. I will pop in when i'm in the area. Its not got the vibe of The Masons or The Bonaparte yet but i reckon it will come good soon enough. jonnybebad - 29 Dec 2008 00:15 |
As a frequenter of The Coleherne of old I would advise anybody who use to go there to pay a visit to get an example of a 21st century gastro pub. It is totally a soul less experience. I accept the pub needed some improvement whilst in the hands of Mitchell & Butlers who invested no money in it. It is interesting to note the pub kitchens are now where the squalid toilets use to overflow and it is interesting to pay a visit downstairs into the old cellar to see the brand new toilets and the kitchen storage room with its banks of freezers - most probably full of portion control preapared meals. The decor is a bit gentrified and gone are the days when you could swill basic cooking lager like Carling till you fell over. Pubs are about people and interaction. Everyone in this place were in their cosy little pairs. It's not a pub and its not a restaurant and and it will be interesting to see where it takes its place in the Earls Court marketplace in a shrinking drinking eating out environment once the new year turns. bob55 - 17 Dec 2008 11:10 |
Went here on Monday night for a meal and drinks with friends after a tough day at work. The place has a lovely atmosphere and the decor is really nice and modern. I had a feta, beetroot and bean salad which was very good along with a tourain sav blanc which was great! The staff here were very friendly and served me quickly, and both me and my friends will be returning soon! Sarah sarahhillier19 - 9 Dec 2008 21:14 |
