New owner in 2009 have made this pub 100x better than what it was! Now got great food really cheap, many locals that are friendly, 4 cask ales and one guest cask ale, strongbow, stella, fosters, guiness, a wide variety of ales available! Pub is riddled with history! Definatly worth a visit (or two!) wiganalan - 8 Jan 2012 11:49 |
Great old pub. Highly recommend the food (I had steak n ale pie and almost had another) Several guest ales on and the snek lifter was really nice. Clean and really nice bar staff. The place is drenched with history. Worth visiting even if its just to look around. pubing - 25 Oct 2010 12:06 |
Character pub with many nooks and crannies. Havent visited for years but had 4 or was it 5 cask beers on and those sampled were in good nick. AlRobis - 31 Jan 2010 13:25 |
Very bizarre place, the clientele looked like extras from the Star wars bar scene and I strongly suspect there are still people in those cellars. The Jennings bitter was exceptable but none of our party felt comfortable in here, we kept getting the feeling we would be dragged outside and be the subject to a sacrificial ritual on the carpark, possibly featuring a large bonfire, if you are into Hammer house of horror films then you will love this place! I am willing to wager the pub dog has a cloven hoof, if the locals tell you to stay off those moors then I would strongly suggest you take their advice. boltonbloke - 11 Oct 2008 20:30 |
This is reputedly the oldest inn in Lancashire and 2nd oldest in the country, and its cellars were once used for convicts on their way to the gallows at Lancaster prison. These days, it's rather less morbid, and is teeming with character inside- exposed beams, fire, tankards and bric-a-brac. Always a few ales including Jennings but is generally quieter than would be expected most of the time. Still, always worth a venture if you're in the area. Carlurmston - 19 Aug 2008 17:30 |
