Average score - 5.1? What do people want from pub?

This is the centre of the village. Here for the first time and I would have been happy enough with ;

Choice of 4 real ales - my black sheep was excellent
A spacious, stone clad floor, with separate areas for drinkers and diners
Some rather comfy looking sofas
A wonderful open fire.

The fact there was a beer festival on and a great atmosphere in the tidy garden where a decent band were playing was a bonus.

Nice Pint of Doom Bar. I didnt eat here, as the Hooray-Henry's taking up most of the bar area put me off. I may revisit soon, where I will update this thread.

It's curious that this place has such a low rating when nearly everything in the reviews seems to be positive. I'd go along with that, too. Although food is obviously a primary consideration here, they've retained a bar area with a genuine pub feel, where drinkers can feel relaxed and unhassled, and where I drank some very pleasant Hook Norton beer, in first rate condition.
The restaurant area is large, and clearly does good business, being pretty well full the night we were there. Good, well prepared food, and not over-expensive for what you're getting.
They have bedrooms too, and these are remarkably cheap, and were clean and comfortable.

Enjoyed a lovely meal yesterday at this gastropub. Decent pint of Shepard Neame Spitfire, also had Hook Norton Bitter on draught. Good choice of food, we had the rack of lamb for mains, from a local butcher and very tasty it was too, washed down with a bottle of smooth Crianza. Quick efficient service, clean surroundings and separate bar and lounge area for those not wishing to dine.

Called in for dinner last night. Peter, the manager, looked after us very well and we were served a superb fish platter to start. The tuna was equally as good, although the potato salad never arrived with it, which was disappointing. However, they deducted the cost of one of the main meals off the bill, which certainly made up for it. Warm welcome and friendly staff, run by a chap who also has a sister pub in Farthinghoe - on the evidence of this, his other pub deserves a look-in too!
