user reviews of the Duke of Wellington, Danby

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A pleasant enough place in a good location. On a nice day you can sit on the front beer garden and watch the world go by in this peaceful village. You are made welcome by the landlord and locals. Seems clean and tidy and the toilets are spotless, we commented to the landlord how good they were, and we dont often say that!
Does B + B and food which we did not try so cant comment, small car park to the front but plenty in the village. No blaring music or footy in you face, and well worth a visit. Prices are not too bad either so give it a try!

A welcome sight after a surprisingly hilly sustrans cycle route, we stayed the night and sampled good pints of Wharf Bank Cam Fell, Copper Dragon 1816 and Daleside Bitter. There is a pleasant seating area by the road outside (Danby is very quiet) and a three room bar. The only odd thing was that, at least on the night we visited, the kitchen wasn't able to cope with more than half a dozen tables ordering food over a 90 minute period (there was no chance of us eating earlier than 8:30pm) and whilst of good quality, the food was quite ordinary. (A good breakfast the next morning cooked on a more normal schedule.)

A handsome and fine pub for drinking, dining or overnighting: no gimmicks, piped music or fruit machines - just good food (much of it home-cooked), good beer, a good wine list, real fires, a mature, pleasant staff and village young men who are not louts but nice chaps who play cricket for their club. (Sadly) what a rarity! Highly recommended for those who like their pubs traditional, simple and good -and from the meal and accommodation boookings register, clearly appreciated by those who care about these things.

What a gem. We stayed overnight at the pub - the food was excellent, the staff were fiendly and the three bitters were all in good condition.
Given this, we were surprised it wasn't busier - only about half a dozen stalwarts at the bar by closing time.
I would definitely go back.
