user reviews of the Merrie Lion, Fenny Compton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Only had a quick half of Purity UBU (served in a branded stemless glass for added effect) whilst on a walk from Northend to Farnborough and back. If the quality of the beer is anything to go by, then I'd say it's worth visiting, especially as they also sell Napton Red Devil cider on draught.

Having tried and failed at the nearby carpenters arms, lower boddington, we get a completely different experience.

Welcomed in, sat down, offered table service and a full an interesting menu.

Three real ales on - two from Jennings and one local brew "Fenny Pride" - which, if I heard correctly from the barman, was actually a Ringwood rebrand.

Beer OK but the food was expectional. Best meals out we have had in a long, long time. Very good prices too.

A great pub - especially for diners. I would travel a distance to get here.

PS. They also have a 'Fenny' ale which is rather nice and I could drink all night ;)

Since reopening this I think is now the best pub for miles around, and believe me we've tried many. Have been for lunch twice - lunch menu has quality sandwiches and hot meals for £5, though meal prices have to go up a bit now due to increasing food prices on the world market.

The owners and staff are very friendly in the right sort of, non-intrusive, way. The kitchen is in the converted barn with the chef(s) on full view from the car park. Not just that, but you know you're going to get a good meal when you're table-served by the chef himself with a proud smile on his face :)))

10/10

Will try the evening menu soon, will post again if anything affects the 10/10 rating.

Congratulations to the owners for saving it from being converted into flats/offices. Long live the village pub!

Fenny Compton's local has now re-opened with great fanfare in July 2012 after being saved from being turned into private housing by a concerted village campaign. Landord's Nigel & Daphne offer a warm welcome in the completely refurbished free house and offer one of the best menu's for many miles around.
