user reviews of the Little Owl, Solihull

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pleasantly surprised to find this tucked away just north of the NEC. Called in for a quick pint late one afternoon when it was quiet, Purity UBU, Sharps Doombar and Harviestoun Old Engine Oil porter available, I'm not a huge fan of Doombar but the other two were on good form. Bar staff were very pleasant, even making sure that my pint was topped up after serving without being asked - always a good sign :)

Didn't eat but the menu looked reasonably priced with specials available before 5pm. It was certainly starting to fill up by around 5.30, I guess from people leaving the NEC and imagine it would be very busy later on.

It's one of the Vintage Inns chain and retains the old beams and exposed brickwork, good to find a real log fire too.

Went to this pub after Ski Show at NEC, was very busy and there did not appear to be enough staff to cope. The beer was decidedly average most of the food was not even this good, but would have been better if it had all been hot - but maybe it cooled down while we were waiting for the cutlery to arrive . Some of the staff were downright rude - we thought we'd stepped into Fawlty Towers by mistake. When enquiring to the where abouts of our drinks order, after waiting for over 20 minutes, the waitress accussed us of "having a moan". The tray of sauces finally arrived as most of us were finishing our meal and when we tried to order more drinks, from the waitress that bought the sauces, we were told she was serving somebody else and she promptly left to clear some plates from a nearby table with mumbling of "your not the only table wanting to be served". So we left, having finally aquired a bill at third time of asking, and went to the hotel next door for the next round, where we met another group who had had a very similar experience in the Little Owl and had ajourned to the sanity of the hotel bar - even though it didn't have any real ale.

Visited mid-week and mid-afternoon. Very quiet, but pleasant welcome and a decent pint of Everards Tiger. Looked more like a restaurant than a pub but had decent selection of real ale available. Handy for anyone staying overnight to see something at NEC as Express Travel Inn next door. OK pub in an area short of places to drink

Decided to meet friends here before attending a concert at NEC. O.K. you might expect them to be busy before an event but surely they should plan accordingly. Took over 10 minutes to get served at the bar. Decided that, as they were obviously over whelmed, we'd just have a selection of starters. Still took over 30 mins to arrive and to say it was disappointing is an understatement. Celery was unwashed and limp, prawns were tastless, pate was grey, and the chicken skewers miniscule. The John Smiths wasn't the best beer we've ever had. The only reasons for scoring 2 were that the Taylor's Landlord was good and the waitress who dealt with our complaints was extremely courteous and got us a partial refund. We'll try somewhere else next time.
