user reviews of Swan House, Beccles

More of a gastropub than anything else. Didn't have any food but it was our first stop in Beccles and was serving beer before 11am which was great news for us. Had Pilsner Urquell on tap and a Belle Vue Kriek as well as Abbot Ale. The landlady was very friendly and gave us some advice on where to go and what to do during our day in Beccles.

Menu looked upmarket but seemed expensive. Didn't stay to eat there.

This place aims to be 'up-market' but fails miserably. My husband and I visited whilst staying at our holiday home for the weekend. The bar staff were totally lacking that 'friendly' vibe ay good pub-worker should have. The food was very nice but lacked that 'special something' and the portions were tiny, leaving us wanting more. The main meals are portioned like children's meals.
On the positive - The decor and outside seating area were very nice.

Pretencious and over priced with extremely rude and unpleasant management. The place looks great but nothing else is good

Less than mediocre. The Swan House aims to look classy and if not just a slight bit pretentious on the outside but truly fails on the inside (whats with the tacky internet references on awning?!). The main meals are more like starters and are really overpriced for the average quality. The fish was overcooked and the potatoes.. where were they? 3 tiny new potatoes on my plate! I ordered one of the foreign beers and found that the glass had traces of lipstick around the rim.The management was rude and the waitresses were very unprofessional and seemed to just be school girls and students. Obviously not trained properly. As a person on holiday from London I would never visit this place again.

It talks the talk, but fails to walk the walk, in the food department at least. The building is stylish and welcoming, a snug bar and fireside in winter, outside tables in the summer. Massive selection of foreign beers, those that I tried were pretty good if a little on the dear side. the food promises much but was a meanly portioned mediocrely cooked offering; a good chef, a little generosity (5 potatoes for 3 diners? are you taking the mick?) and a little honesty (puddings "homemade"? Hmmmmm, me thinks not) would go a long way to make this passion for good beer and wine and art events what its clearly striving to be.
