user reviews of Grouse Inn, Carrog
please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
As the other reviews say fantastic views from the bar and the outside seating area. A short walk from the Llangothlen railway. The Golden Pedlar was very good. Even though a Lees pub it has retained its identity. Rocky53 - 27 Jul 2014 11:43 |
This pub certainly wins the award for the best view of the day. It has a picture postcard setting overlooking the River Dee and the narrow stone bridge over the river. Surrounded by green hills, it's a wonderful setting. The only let down is that it is a chain pub, run by JW Lees. Three of their ales were on - Bitter, John Willie's & Golden Peddler were on. Sitting on the terrace outside was certainly very pleasant. blue_scrumpy - 30 Jun 2014 20:54 |
Visited this pleasant pub after searching for a pub near the Llangollen steam railway , which is just five minutes walk away down the country lane. We were quite a large group of adults and children but all found something to eat on the menu . There are quite a few fish dishes on the menu here and the ones we chose went down very well , as did the well kept Lees ale of which there were 2 on , which is fine for a midweek day at the end of October . The staff are friendly and effecient , the pub is clean and the views of the river valley are great , all in all we shall be coming again. 8 out 10. DiscoJoe - 31 Oct 2009 09:50 |
Can only concur with previous review. Not the biggest fan of Lees' generally and was quite surprised to find one stuck out here. However, they did let us in five minutes early after we tried the door which was a nice touch. There's little to do in Carrog once you've travelled the excellent Llangollen Railway so it relies upon this for a lot of trade. Steered clear of the Lees Bitter but the Coronation Street Bitter was quite quaffable, as I find with their guest ales. Cracking window view over the River Dee and 17th century bridge which is a bigger draw than the pub itself, which is fairly standard and food-led. It's not a bad pub at all. Well, looks like I'm the first to post on this one. The Grouse Inn is a nicely situated pub in the small village of Carrog, overlooking the River Dee and the picturesque 17th century stone bridge. The restored railway station at Carrog, a 5 minute walk away from the pub, is the westerly terminus of the steam train line which runs from Llangollen and is a popular tourist attraction. In order to benefit from passengers, the pub is open all day for food and drink. Perhaps not surprisingly, there is a strong food emphasis, with most tables set up for dining. A standard pub menu is offered. It's a three roomed smallish traditionally furnished pub, but with a large outside terrace at the side which affords fine views of the river and bridge, plus the distant hills. An information panel lower down the hill by the bridge tells us that Carrog used to have 4 pubs and that The Grouse Inn is now the sole survivor. It was apparently once a farm and a brewhouse. It's a J W Lees of Oldham pub and my recent mid-September visit found 3 real ales on - Lees Bitter, Willie Lees Premium Bitter and Coronation Street Premium Ale, the latter being rather naffly described as "Gripping Drama in a glass" by a poster near the bar. Both the Lees Bitter and the Coronation Street Premium Ale were in good condition, as befits a current GBG - listed pub. In fact, the pub proudly displays a certificate from the local CAMRA branch in recognition of 20 consecutive years in the GBG from 1989-2009. It's a pleasant enough pub, not worth going out of your way to visit as a pub in itself, but if you're travelling on the steam train, it's well worth the short walk from the Carrog railway terminus if you're feeling either peckish or thirsty.
