The pub is in the middle of the village, set back off the 'main' road to Mortenhampsted. It has a car park just across the road. The building is divided into several rooms. An area for eating just to your right inside the door, has the feeling of a tea room, with a lovely view from the window. To the left of the door is a more open area, popular with the locals and their friendly dogs. Just beyond is more seating and a little below a pool room. Has a lived in feel with no attempt to "smarten it up" All credit to the owners for this. Nice welcome from the Landlady(?) Food was good with large portions. It was Fish night when we visited. Couple of beers on hand pump. Had a pint of Doombar which was in good form. Well worth a visit captaineric - 10 Sep 2016 23:06 |
Served the worst pint I had in a week of visiting Devon pubs. Cloudy and sour. As the only other choice was Abbot I didn't bother. No wonder the only other customer in there was drinking wine. The barmaid clearly had no interest in what she was serving becked - 10 Nov 2012 20:37 |
Nice place to stop for a pint and a sandwich while in the area as we did one recent Saturday lunchtime. Friendly landlord, good choice of drinks and a reasonably priced food choice. Try and bag a seat in the large window area and enjoy the view. To the rear of the pub was a collection of animals such as horses and goats which would be popular with the kids. thegaffer - 26 Mar 2011 07:46 |
All right, so I was on holidays from Oz - and this pubs atmosphere and general warm conviviality made a pleasant change from the unpleasant summer weather of 2008 the UK experienced. Staying in the village for a week proved to be a plus - good walking both through the village and in the local regions - kept me with a thirst! Meals were good, mainly prepared by the owner, fish night is a definite book ahead, or be prepared to wait. It was easy to fall into conversations with the locals, who were very welcoming. Look out for the word of the week.... bobbyj1 - 17 May 2009 12:16 |
