Went there after visiting the local leisure centre where my schoolfriend had been coaching water polo. Nice feel about the 'Spoons and my Ruddles was in good nick. Ordered a chilli which hit the spot and was invited to join a small group of locals which was a lovely gesture (wouldn't happen in London!). When the water polo team arrived, we had a splendid evening but the three pints of Jail Ale certainly reminded me that I'd had a drink! Very nice pub that I'd visit again. roobs52 - 9 Feb 2018 17:00 |
Just to give an update on the matchday situation at the Brit. A normal food menu has now resumed this season after a near-10-year gap, the pub getting too crowded in some of Argyle's more successful seasons in the early 2000s being the cause of the suspension. Use of proper glasses has also recommenced, with plastics only being brought into play when the numbers require it. The pub itself has had a fresh carpet and lick of paint in the late summer to tidy it up. Paula, Ruth and the staff run a good ship and in my opinion this is the best Wetherspoons in the country, although perhaps I am a little biased as it is my matchday local. Beer quality is never a problem here. In fact my only criticism would be that dark beers aren't available as often as I'd like, but then that is a fault you could level at most pubs. One of my favourite 'Spoons, certainly based on early evening mid-week visits. The fiercesome local beer (Hunter ?) was superb, and food above average, with a good mix of customers. mtaylor40 - 9 Jun 2011 21:40 |
Went on a match day, excellent adaptability I must say. Some pubs keep fans in colours out, but this one lets everyone in. Some have no food on match days, or struggle to provide a full menu, but this one does a limited menu of 4 items. Very sensible. Plastic 'glasses', food in cardboard boxes, no cutlery - 10 out of 10 for adapting to the situation and keeping everyone happy. Friendly staff and good range of real ales. I must go back on a 'normal' day... Trev - 31 Jan 2011 12:08 |
What can you say? Wetherspoons... Excellent range of reasonably well kept ales, mediocre but cheap grub. Good service. Can get busy on steak/curry night or when Argyle are playing at home! Medicrob1 - 19 Nov 2010 10:38 |
