This was easily the best of 22 pubs I visited in Devon and Cornwall over the weekend. We missed it at first. The signs are currently hidden by scaffolding. But it is right in the centre of this quaint Dartmoor village. Parking is limited. New owners have taken over the pub and seem to be making a real go of it. The pub could certainly do with a small makeover. But I couldn't fault the ale and cider selection and the food was pretty decent too. It seemed to be enjoying a good local custom. Ales were Dartmoor Legend, Exeter County Best & Roam Tavy IPA. But it was the cider selection that impressed me most. There were a number of boxes at the one end of the bar. Although I think they were left over from a cider festival held the previous weekend of the August Bank Holiday. They had Sandford Orchards Old Kirton, Countyman Farm Scrumpy Medium, Cornwall Cider Company Rhubarb & Custard, Winkleigh Sam's Autumn Scrumpy & Fruity Blackcurrant, Lilley's Pickled Parrot Perry & Orchard Pig Navel Gazer. The décor is simple and traditional. There is a small garden at the rear. Lovely pub, worthy of an 8/10.

Did'nt really click with this place, although i think it may have been owned by the previous owners when we visited a few years back.
I imagine though that most tourists never find it with all the other pubs in the area getting the trade.

This pub is going from strength to strength! The new Landlord and Landlady have been here for 2 years now and have changed things around dramatically! Food is good and reasonably prcied and they have actually just reduced the price of their Jail Ale to 2.50 per pint so i believe, considering most pubs on Dartmoor are charging any where from 3 to 3.20 usually this is staggeringly good!! when was the last time you heard of a pub reducing it's beer prices!? After all Jail is only made in nearby Princetown, it is not like they have to get it from Orkney!!! Any way, this pub is a delight and is a real hub of the community now, i cannot wait for the sausage and cider festival this year, last years was brilliant and well worth going too.
if you are in the area and you want a real pub then this one or the Royal Oak at Meavy are the best by far, The Rock at Yelverton serves a purpose but it is over priced and is a tourist trap as is the Burrator Inn. Seek it out and ye shall find!!

This pub has been ruined by previous lanlord but the news ones are turning it back to the way it was.

great food and an excellant experience and good priced beer.

if youve been disappointed in the past give it another try as this pub is the best in the area...
