We had lunch prior to our visit to the prison in 'The Governors Hall'
Lunch was freshly prepared by a proper chef from a multi choice menu

The beer I chose was Governors Ale a fresh citrusy yellow beer.
The restaurant and entrance to the prison has been completly redisigned since hampshirehog visited and no evidence of rugby or anything Welsh either. It felt like the converted prison chapel that it once was. The bar and some of the wooden fittings didn't seem to fit the general ambience or architecture of the original building.
Quirky but the beer and meals were good.

Rating has been reduced - Only the two Brains beers (SA & Rev James) this time, and the sandwiches are now french stick, and definitely not as good as last year. It's still not bad, but I was in Bodmin for the steam railway, and made a lengthy detour (on foot) to go there - Without the sandwiches or guest ale, it was disappointing after that walk.

We found this to be a rather soulless place once inside and a bit of a disappintment after the grandeur that impressed us on the outside. Of the 3 real ales they were supposed to have, only 1 (Brains SA) was available. The comfy chairs were really good for relaxing. Although the history of rugby video being played on the big screen made lingering tiresome! We didn't get chance to visit the jail, but this would be the only reason to return if I am ever in Bodmin again.

Unusual set up here, with this pub being the starting point to the Bodmin Jail experience. You pay at the bar to get admission to the jail, which is accessed through a door next to the toilets! One side of the pub is a sort of restaurant and the other side is done out like a gentlemans reform club, with sumptuous leather sofas etc, and there is a heavy Welsh influence with rugby shirts adorning the walls( owner must be Welsh). The bar on this side is made from an old witness box dating from 1856 which is an interesting touch. I thought I would continue the Welsh theme by sampling the Brain's SA Gold, which I thought was a lovely pint. Enjoyed this pub and would visit again if I was ever passing through Bodmin again.

Loved it. Princetown Jail Ale (Excellent pint) and 2 Brains beers being served, and absolutely fantastic doorstep sandwiches. They might seem over-priced at 4.25, but were worth every penny. Terrific service, very friendly, and a great place to start/ end a visit to the jail.
