After our dreadful visit to the nearby Travellers Friend, The Swan was like a heavenly oasis. It had real ale, warmth, and lighting which all felt so very pleasant on a cold December day. Staff were friendly and helpful. 3 ales available - Tribute, the ubiquitous Doom Bar and Courage Best. We did visit at about 3 in the afternoon so there weren't many customers. The pub boasts a bizarre library in one of its many small alcoves containing scientific textbooks on a whole range of obscure and esoteric subjects, just the sort of stuff to send you to sleep after a few beers ! As it's handy for the station, we'll probably try this one again when next in the area to get a view of it at busier times. ramblethenlunch - 16 Dec 2010 11:34 |
Went here last week, as were touring on the Canal, this was a nice pub, although felt more of a restaurant / pub than local pub. All the staff were pretty helpful, good selection of beers and wines. Food was godd, quick and reasonable. I would return. Just don't expect a small rfiendly pub feeling, its all a bit anonomous! JimO - 10 May 2010 12:41 |
Fender100 clearly thinks anyone under the age of 25 is a 'chav' or 'proletarian pleb'. The REAL plebs can be found in the Old Chequers or Crickets - where it's also more expensive! Nothing wrong with this place - read the other comments! spmartin - 25 Jan 2010 08:29 |
This used to be a pleasant place to drink in with good staff and not bad prices. Now however, it seems overrun with chavs and proletarian plebs. Drink prices are also now totally outrageous. Far better and more upmarket places are nearby and make more pleasant places to drink. fender100 - 11 Jan 2010 14:55 |
True, the selection of beers does seem to have gotten better. They have HSB and they also had a Christmas one, which wasn't bad. Previosuly I liked this pub, but had only ever sat outside in the big beer garden, as I'd always visited in the summer (makes a good lunch stop if you're on a barge holiday - the canal passes by very close) but this time, it being winter, we sat inside waiting for a train - the station is also very close) and it's better inside than out. The area it's in is a bit industrial, but inside it feels like a proper old country inn, has lovely old beams and great little nooks and crannies. The menus make it seem very 'chainy', but actually it isn't. Good, solid pub. Greshon - 7 Dec 2009 10:55 |
