| The Railway is the nearest pub to the station at Bexley and it opens at 11am most days. So, we were here early yesterday morning. One other customer later joined us. The interior has a railway theme, as you might expect and it is fairly traditional. | Was always a fan of this pub under the previous landlord due to it's pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff. However, the same cannot be said since under the current management. On my most recent visit, both my wife and I caught people doing drugs in the toilets, all the tables were a mess and I was called a 'pussy' by the manager when I declined a packet of spicy peanuts and ordered salted instead. | Plain single bar. No atmosphere. No character. No food. Slightly smelly. Sunday lunchtime it had one regular, the landlord and his wife and me - then a man with special needs came in. Triangular white bread sandwiches were offered. Edible. The focus is on the beer apparently. The regular beer is Courage Best and there are three rotating quests chosen randomly. Neither of the two quest beers I was served were in top condition. The landlord is friendly and chatty, though doesn't understand beer or how to keep it. He hadn't vented one cask properly so it was overly foamy. Then we entered a bizarre conversation when he told me that Courage Best wasn't quite right when it was first brewed at Wells, because the water was too carbonated and made the beer too fizzy. I said that the carbonation comes from the yeast. He looked blank, and said, no, it came from the water. I said that I had not heard that the Eagle Brewery well contained carbonated water, but even if it did, the carbonation would be lost when the water was boiled to make the beer. He looked blank again, and then said that some might be lost, but most would remain. According to the landlord this sad and smelly little pub won a CAMRA award for the best pub in South London. Each to their own, but when you have a pub of the quality of the Kings Head across the road, serving beer in excellent condition, then giving this pub any sort of award is crazy. | I quite like it in there, although you do feel you've aged ten years by the time you step back out. Always seem to find myself on the whisky when in here, as I fear that if I order lager I'll be looked on like a chav, trying to be trendy, who has no idea of the struggles of the older generation. hillsiola - 10 Sep 2011 02:25 |
| This is a fantastic little pub, The Landlord and bar staff make you feel welcome and they have great theme days on a saturday. Any bad reviews of this pub is clearly not needed and from someone who clearly doesn't get out very much! Bexley1990 - 3 Aug 2011 15:43 |
