Have to agree with darren in the city, beer is great and the the girl who served us was absolutely lovely, although the bar man wasn't, but the food really lets the place down. Very expensive, which would be ok if the quality corresponded with the price. Real shame, we won't eat here again. Bananaramama - 19 Jun 2011 15:48 |
Great beer. Good atmosphere. Friendly staff. But food well overpriced and not value for money at all. Darren_in_the_City - 9 Nov 2010 12:27 |
I'd have to second Arpa's comments. This was the best pub we found in Essex yesterday. The separate areas complement each other well. We sat in the area to the right as you enter, where people had gathered to watch the rugby. The view across the rolling fields was nice. The interior has been modernised sympathetically (unlike the Bird in Hand up the road in Earls Colne which had lost most of its character) to produce a comfortable environment in which to enjoy a point. The toilets were clean too. Most importantly, they had a good range of real ales - Twenty 10, Wolf in Sheep's Clothing (both from the Wolf brewery), Humpty Dumpty Ale, Adnams Bitter and Greene King IPA. The cider is Aspalls. Could happily make this my local if I lived around here. blue_scrumpy - 15 Feb 2010 10:09 |
Brilliant pub and the best I have found yet! Ive frequented this establishment as much as my liver permitted over the last seven or so years and never been disappointed. Darren the landlord and his wife have gradually developed the pub over this time and there are now three distinctive areas catering for all requirements. At one end of the bar, through an arch is the games area with big screen tv, pool table, board games and a fruity; in the middle (where you arrive) is a traditional county bar which has been sympathetically updated and decorated creating a comfortable and cosy environment and at the far end, a restaurant with an upstairs lounge. All elements come together harmoniously without interfering with each other (ie. you can play pool and watch football / cricket, then retire to the bar for a relaxed beer and then onto the restaurant for dinner - perfect!) Log fires in winter add to the atmosphere and a well maintained beer garden overlooking the fields is great in the summer. The food is always excellent with the menu consisting of mainly English classics with a few other cuisines thrown in regularly to keep things varied. It is also worth checking the specials board. While not the cheapest in the area for food, I believe in paying a little more for something that is locally sourced, fresh and well prepared and therefore deem it good value. Dishes are also labeled with food allergy sufferers in mind with many Gluten Free options. Leaving the most important to last: the beer! Always a great selection of ales to choose from (something like five guest ales at a time I seem to remember) and well kept. There is also the usual selection of lager, range of ciders and decent wine list to choose from. The service has always been excellent and the staff are warm, friendly and most importantly when busy, efficient! Considering the amount of time Ive spent in this place, I could write an essay but will conclude that its a great pub and well worth a visit! Arpa - 24 Dec 2009 11:02 |
Excellent pub. Was here last weekend for their beer festival which had some very good beers on both in terms of quality and range. The pub itself is well designed with plenty of guest beers - with one bar showing Sky and has a pool table, with the other geared up for those looking for a quieter time or a chat with friends by the fire. Seperate large dining room too. Would give it 10/10 - but it's in the middle of nowehere and, more importantly, NOT right next door to where I live; meh! So just a 9 then.
