| Hotel bar spoilt by successive makeovers. There's very little character remaining. On the plus side, the bar is light and airy and Cranbrook itself is a lovely small town/large village. | Very interesting old building, which wasn't exactly new when Queen Elizabeth (the First) stayed in 1573. Much more recently, it has received something of a makeover with some fancy modern decor fitted around the older parts of the structure. Taken over by Shepherd Neame in 2008, it offers three real ales (Master Brew, Spitfire and the decent seasonal Amber Ale on my recent visit). If you just want a drink, you'll probably feel more comfortable in the 'Cranbrook Bar' (at the end of the building closer to the windmill), but it's worth getting a seat in the Brasserie when it's quiet just to look at the rather amazing old staircase. rpadam - 25 Jan 2010 21:58 |
