I've been going on & off for about 10 years, during which time it's changed hands, decor and shape a few times. Definitely in a good phase now; the food is excellent; good portions and reasonable value whether you're just going for a bar meal or a full sit-down restaurant meal. Digfield ales are a regular item, always reasonably kept; I had Barnwell Bitter and Fool's Nook this time round. My only complaint now is that where the bar used to be open to a really cosy room with an open fire, they've now walled it off and made that part just an eating area. What's left of the bar itself now feels like part of the lobby - not really somewhere to linger ... spladdocks - 19 Feb 2011 22:32 |
Although the Wheatsheaf is actually a four-star residential hotel, it does not seem to have abandoned its roots as Upper Benefields village pub. Admittedly, the real ale choice is limited to either Barnwell Bitter from the local micro Digfield Brewery, or the ubiquitous G-K IPA. As I avoid drinking any G-K brew whenever there is an alternative, I cannot comment on the IPA, but the Barnwell Bitter was superb. The staff were all very friendly and efficient and the food was excellent, and for a **** hotel, not too pricey. I can thoroughly recommend the BLT baguette (crammed with 4 thick rashers of best back bacon) served with home made chips. Based on our experience, the Wheatsheaf thoroughly deserves its four-star rating and I have no hesitation in giving it 9/10. steve2905 - 16 May 2008 05:55 |
