Fairly pleasant pub in a nice bit of Essex. We were pleased to be able to get a reasonably-priced meal although the quality was nothing special. Unfortunately the roaring fire was in the same room as the *massive* sports screen, while we were sidelined to the dark and chilly dining area. However, the landlord was friendly and it would probably have felt very different if we'd been sat in the garden on a busy sunny day. KathS - 5 Apr 2011 14:24 |
I hope things have changed for the better at this pub. Some years ago I organised a Christmas lunch here for thirty guests. As I was about to leave the then landlord calmly told me that twenty or so had not paid for their meals. This was patently untrue and a deliberate con trick. Unfortunately, I made a big mistake by paying the alleged shortfall on my credit card. What I should have done was to call the police and expose this swindler for what he was. In fact, I should have smelt a rat earlier when it became apparent that out of four handpumps on the bar, only one of them was working. Subsequent enquiries revealed that at least two local breweries would no longer supply this place-I wonder why? motorcyclist - 11 Aug 2010 15:24 |
Wonderful 15th Century country pub, big beer garden, jukebox, bar billards, real ales and great food including the Black Rock Grill. Had a wonderful afternoon, nothing is too much trouble. Thoroughly recommend. T Miller - 31 Jan 2007 15:26 |
