| A rather plain exterior with fading gold lettering on green paintwork doesn't immediately shout "pub" to those passing by, a feature not helped by the traditional pole-mounted sign being located some distance away on the other side of the road. Inside, the rusticated layout of four separate seating areas is little changed from the short-lived (and unlamented) 'Hopping Hooden Horse' days. There is also a simple part-patio, part-grass beer garden to one side. It has one of fancy Greene King IPA dispensers, and there are typically two or three other real ales (such as Doom Bar and London Pride) on offer from the five handpumps. The most interesting feature is the display in the nominal dining area - with a very basic menu - about Paddock Wood's most famous son (after whom the pub is named). This place has improved dramatically in recent weeks, not least because of the new staff and new ales. Go there for the Hobgoblin and the Old Speckled Hen and stay (on a sunday) for the roast dinner. NickyD1978 - 13 May 2010 22:43 |
| For a small village this seems like a great little pub. The customers are very friendly and the staff are quick when it comes to getting a drink, i had just finished my first before i was being offerend my second without even having to ask. I think the lighting is great and the music in the background was good. Is nice not to have youngsters putting trash on and swearing all around. | I'm afraid this is a shockingly poor establishment with little if anything to recommend. Uninterested staff and poor selection of ales. Great shame as under the right management there is an awful lot of potential for it to be a very good pub. saintsforever - 13 Jan 2010 10:30 |
