| Popped in here again for the first time in what must be 20 odd years. It hasn't changed on little bit. This could be such a great pub but the attention to detail just isn't there. The outside looks tiered and the inside is quite shabby. The beers were the usual dross offered around the Forest. | I visited this pub (as many others probably have) whilst on a family holiday to the New Forest. It�s an impressive and imposing building in fantastic surroundings � the garden was excellent, especially the huge play area kept my son amused for ages! Perhaps where my visit differed is there were only four visitors in the place � me and the rest of the family. The food came quickly and was very good quality. I can�t fault it at all: I had the game pie which was piping hot with a really tasty puffy top and my wife, the haddock and chips which due to the size was party eaten by me as well. Even my son left the play area to enjoy his meal which is a rarity� Beer wise, I had the Ringwood �49er� and Flack Manor, �Flack's Double Drop�. Both well kept and very refreshing. | My wife and I found this pub whilst taking our children for a walk at the New Forest last week. We made our way to this pub, after our walk, to order a Sunday roast. The bar was a little busy but there were 2 very good bar men at hand so everyone got served fairly quickly. After we ordered our drinks we decided to sit and have our food. we were both extrememely impressed with our roast beef dinner which was cooked to perfection; lots of tender meat, slightly crunchy veg and near perfect roast potatoes. We thought that this must have just been the chef having a 'good day' as we have had countless badly cooked roast dinners at the various pubs we have visited in the past. We sat outside afterwards so that the children could play in the garden and both agreed that we probably would rate this pub near the top of the scale. However, today we made the journey to this pub all the way from Farnham, Surrey (where we live) as we rather enjoyed our walk and dinner from the previous week. When our dinner arrived we both could not believe it! It was exactly the same as the previous week, excellent and perfectly cooked. For eight quid, this is the best roast dinner i've ever been served at a restaurant style pub in a very long time. It's actually worth the 50 mile journey down here. In fact, whilst we were watching our children play in the garden, we met another couple at this pub today who told us that they too travel from miles out in Sussex just to come here for the food. The staff were efficient and polite and the ale (Ringwood 49'er) was in top condition. The only thing that slightly annoyed me about this pub is that you have to que up at a seperate window to order your food. | This is pretty far off the beaten track. Normally, I would stick with the Royal Oak at Fritham, but they had a 60th birthday "do", so I had to go elsewhere. This is "not bad", but not particularly outstanding either. They have a range of "real" beers" (Ringwood, etc.) and the food is reasonable. However, given a choice, I would rather go to The Royal Oak any day. (The barman was Australian, on my visit.) 6/10 HenPen - 5 Feb 2010 13:02 |
| Our walking group have visited the Sir Walter Tyrell on a number of occasions over the years. So lets get the reviews into context. This is a very busy pub on a fine weekend. Saying that we have never been treated discourteously. Yes most of the staff are non British but on our last visit we were served by two charming young men one of them French. The staff work hard and for the most part have been very pleasent. Also the food is good, reasonably priced & the service is quick. The Tyrell is a popular pub with forest visitors, consequently it is often very busy. My advice as a local is get in early & be nice to the staff. By the way, the beer is always well kept.
