Just returned from a weeks holiday where this pub became the pub for a night visit, although they haven't really got a rival. I was taken aback by the 3 a pint but that could be said for the whole island. They still have the Deuchars IPA on with the other pump selling Harviestoun Bitter and Twisted which was replaced by Abbotts at the end of the week. The food as has already been noted is pricey but well cooked and seemed popular with all visitors. The place seemed to lack atmosphere which maybe because most people were dining as opposed to supping but good place to sit outside if warm and staff were pleasant and heplful. We tried the Bar Eden to try and escape the outrageous prices charged at some of the other places we tried during a short break to Arran. It only worked to a slight degree as we found the inside rooms incredibly noisy. Why don't interior designers take a course on acoustics. The customers cahtter was reflect off a hradwood floor, blank walls and ceilings and there was nothing to soften the noise level. Even when customer left the other tables had to increase their noise levels to carry on a conversation. Try some carpet and curtains to reduce the industrial levels of noise! The food was good but we reckoned it was 20% dearer than anywhere similar on the mainland. A pint of beer and a 300ml bottle of Bud' was 5.60!!! The local brew, Arran Ales bottled beer was priced at 1.98 in the Co Op, we buy it Morrisons for 1.50. I know that things on islands are usually more expensive than the mainland but I object to paying London prices for no other reason than making big profits. BlueDome - 16 Sep 2007 10:05 |
This is a bar on the left hand side of a larger hotel overlooking a bowling green and, from the garden at least, with a view of the sea. It is in the 2007 Camra guide. On my visit, although there were two hand pumps, only one of them was operating serving Deuchars IPA. But the beer was good, the menu looked interesting and sitting outside was very pleasant. drtimthornton - 27 May 2007 18:05 |
Smart, clean, two types of real ale. On the sea front. Tom Walmsley - 2 May 2006 15:22 |
