The Poltimore Arms is possibly the best pub in England. The landlord was telling us that they are not on the national grid and they have a sometimes unreliable generator providing the power as he lit the candles but I don't think that should bother you. The pub has a nice roaring fire, excellent beers and fantastic food. You will realise that there are still great people running pubs during and after your visit as they were friendly, helpful and generally a good bunch of people. As mada points out, it is still too far from home. This pub would definitely be my local if it was closer. FF fullersfan - 31 Mar 2013 22:43 |
First time back for about two years. We called Sat lunchtime and met new landlords, very pleasant localpeople who had wanted to run this special pub for many years. when previous landlord retired through ill health, they took their chance. We enjoyed the conversations, excellent tasty food and good exmoor beer. This very special place is in good hands and will get even better. Remote with no mains electricity but landlords said they intend to improve signposting. Please note I think cards are still not accepted due remoteness,I remember the first time I came here and when i went to pay by credit card the previous landlord said sorry we cannot process cards, send me a cheque in the post!!! We had enough cash to pay. This sums up the Poltimore, still too far from home :>((( mada - 24 Jul 2010 21:11 |
What a gem of a pub! Have just had a brilliant Sunday lunch, locally sourced meat cooked to perfection and divine home-made puds. Wonderful atmosphere, new landlords who have freshened up the bar while maintaining the lovely old English pub feel. Now serving a great real ale 'Gundog'. Don't visit Exmoor without a trip to The Poltimore. sandunes - 7 Feb 2010 19:25 |
Last night the service was poor, it took an hour for the staff to tell me that my starter selection was not available, then half an hour to tell me my pudding selection was not available. Not impressed. Banana split on the pudding menu has been there for 20 years at least. At least the Tawney ale was good. I won't be rushing back. pjemmison - 18 Oct 2009 11:50 |
Unbeatable pub food with a wide range of dishes freshly cooked using local meat and fish. the last mouthful tastes as good as the first!!. Delicate use of herbs and spices produce food as good as any 5* hotel. Quick pleasant service both sides of the bar with excellent beers. Over 50 meals served on the night of our visit so booking is recommended. This 13th century pub has flagstones, bare tables and lighting provided by a generator so it is pleasantly different. A genuine pub which is well worth visiting. See you there(wish it was back home in Cardiff so I could visit more often) mada - 10 Jan 2006 22:19 |
