user reviews of the Red Lion, Stratton Audley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I can't decide whether the manorial Oxfordshire village of Stratton Audley sounds more like an estate agents or a West Indian cricketer, but nomenclature aside, this establishment isn't far off being the quintessential English village pub. The welcome was warm, the ambience cosy and there's much emphasis on the nags, judging by the paraphernalia on the walls. A hearty dish of bangers and mash was served piping hot and was washed down with a cracking pint of Moorhouse's White Witch. The only slight gripe might be the 'reserved' signs on all the tables, which I understand is there to prevent drinkers occupying the tables, yet seems excessive.

A popular village pub, with pretty good food. The beer was a reasonably wide choice and what I had was well kept. The landlord seemed to me to be a friendly and civilized man (in spite of snert's experience). I don't often get to this part of the country much nowadays, but I am well disposed to this place. 7/10

Well, what can I say. The pub had improved greatly over the last couple of years. Was a nice little pub with good food. I still think the food is good.

Whatever you do, don't get on the wrong side of the landlord, Frank. Little short man with a serious dose of little-man syndrome. I won't be going back after last nights escapade.

Bought a drink, sat down and was then politely asked to move by the manager to a different table. The other table on offer was not a nice table so I declined the offer to move. I was told it was because someone wished to eat. I pointed out that there were 3 empty tables in the restaurant part of the pub, to which I was told that he didn't wish to put them there.

It was at that point, Frank, the bad tempered landlord stoved in and told us that we couldn't sit there. Very aggressive little man. After much raised discussion from him, he told us that he would refund out money and we could drink elsewhere. We took him up on his offer and left.

Nice pub. Absolute nutcase of a landlord with a bad temper and a horrible attitude towards anyone not eating. It isn't the first time I have witnessed him telling drinking customers off for petty reasons. I would avoid this place in the future.

Very much a locals pub but very friendly. The locals tend to squash themselves into a small corner by the bar. Staff are pretty good unless there is football or something on the TV. Food is pretty good. It has a large restaurant in it as well. The beer garden is pretty much concrete slabs so it is like a school playground rather than a beer garden. They could do with training the dog not to use it as a loo as it can get a bit smelly if the dog has left a few "reminders" around the yard. Nice fireplace. Beer is pretty good but not too cheap.
