This pub has recently been decorated and new furnishings , outside cleaned up , some real bargain nights in the restaurant mid-week, Still The Best Pub around ,great landlord ( phill) and my favourite bar girl ( tracy) , who really welcomes EVERYONE ,

Quite an imposing pub from the outside, with a large car park and in a pretty village, this place is a little underwhelming inside. The bar area was packed with locals and was a little rowdy. Beers available were Theakston Paradise Ale, Greene King Abbot Ale and Wells Bombardier. A larger dining area can be find to the right as you walk in and tables continue around to the rear. The restaurant area had particularly grubby seating. Food was very pricey, but the portions were large. I'm not convinced it was worth what we paid. The Red Lion up the road seemed to be doing a better trade in meals, albeit at even more inflated prices. For a moment, I thought I was in London.

first impression of the pub not great because it looks very run down and neglected especially with the "e" missing from the name. The walls were filthy - but, I put it down to rustic charm as I had heard good things about the food.

The service was bad to say the least - Had to get our own menus and told that only the lunch menu was on. When I went back 15 minutes later to ask for our order to be taken I was then told all the menu was on. Food was over priced but I expected it was going to be worth the money. 15.60 for a 10oz rib eye and 10.50 for sausage and mash.

We then waited over 50 minutes before the food arrived and when it did... The ribeye was rump. It was over cooked so much it that it, squeaked when I cut it. It was covered in muchrooms that were sponges of grease. We also order a side order of onion rings that were sitting in approximately 2 tablespoons of grease!!
I sent back the steak, as, when paying 15.60, your entitled to enjoy it to some extent.
It came back a ribeye and though cooked a little less than the previous burnt offering, it was boring blant and dry. I have had better steaks from Morrisons or the Coop. There is a really good farmshop down the road so, I had assumed that they probably supplied the meat - but, there is no doubt in my mind that it certainly didnt come from there.

Including a kids meal of chicken nuggets and the extra portion of onion rings our bill was 42.50!!

Not an easy pub to find, but well worth the effort. The decor and garden look a bit tired but the beer and food are first class.
