A cynical first impression from the outside was that this may be like a hotel bar. So, I was pleased to find three ales on tap - Director's Bitter, Caledonian Flying Scotsman and the one which I went for, Thwaites' Magic Sponge. That was £3.70 and went down very nicely sat out in the sunshine in the extensive beer garden which backs on to the main road.
Seems very much to be a place geared around dining so to find three ales on tap was definitely a bonus.

True about the The Engineers Arms comparison to The Crown, but they're two different markets. The Crown is a very good food pub and having two pubs doing the same thing so close wouldn't work well anyway.

There were three real ales (Broadside was one, can't recall the other two) and 3.40 a pint so 40p more than the engineers. But the food was excellent, faultless, clearly all home made (even the burger bap, tomato sauce), and the service pleasant, efficient, polite and prompt. The place was busy during the week lunchtime too. A nice place to start a trip to The Engineers and I think if they tried to make it more a beer pub the only way it would work would be to dilute trade from The Engineers which isn't a likely scenario!

Nice enough pub in its own right. But knowing the Engineers Arms is just down the road, somehow detracts from your enjoyment of this one. Ossett Silver King, Youngs Gold & Adnams Broadside were the 3 ales on offer. Cider was Aspalls. Low beams and a large fireplace create a fairly authentic feel. It's also much bigger inside than it looks from the outside, with plenty of separate drinking areas.

The below quote just about sums this place up, although you can add well kept ales and a clean, cosy atmosphere to that. A glance at the menu tells you that some ingredients are locally sourced, which is nice to know. If you're in Henlow and want to eat, this is the pub for you, but for a drink the Engineer's Arms wins hands down.

"Standard pub grub served in a timely manner from a friendly face."
