Olde Worlde interior. Went for a pint of Wherry which was just about drinkable. Not somewhere I'll be rushing back to.

Has been a good pub in the past and now seems back almost to its best. Low ceilings and with a bar billiards table (all too rare these days), small rooms with timber and stucco that fill up quickly and with a mainly middle-aged and above clientele. Six beers on draught including a mild (Mardlers), a stout (Marston's Oyster) and a stronger IPA (Marston's Old Empire) - so nothing rare but covers a decent range of styles. The staff provide a good welcome and are on good terms with regulars and strangers alike. The food is unadventurous but surprisingly cheap for an urban pub (lunch, evening and Sunday roasts). Provides useful choice in the town centre.

Lovely olde worlde pub just off town centre really warm welcome and great lively atmosphere, board games available or just sit and chat and meet new friends.
Under new management since June 11, serving 6 real ales (no gk or cw beers here!) woodefordes wherry alongside ever changing beers, nutty black mild a real winner, London Pride ESB SA Gold to name but a few .... food is served 12-2.30 bar snacks and main meals - sunday lunches (booking advisable 01480 216863)
Juke box available zoned areas to facilitate quiet corners.
Lovely suntrap patio area (if we ever get the sun) come and try us out guarantee you wont be disappointed!

In here last Saturday and very poor.
Three hand pumps but nothing available
Only one had a clip for GK IPA but that was off.
The young man behind the bar did try by pulling off a drop.
He then had a quick smell of it before shaking his head.

Used to be the best pub in the town centre under the previous landlord, the infamous Jerry, with equally infamous lock-ins, but went downhill with introduction of legal late nights, and when landlord could no longer be arsed and seemed more intent on winding up customers and staff.
New-ish tenants (2 yrs-ish) have just about reversed the decline under adverse circumstances (smoking ban, recession etc). On a good night if a few people are in it can be very good, if it's a bit quiet it can lack atmosphere, but the staff are always welcoming.

On the beer side they seem to have finally cottoned on to the fact that selling Wells Bombardier AND Greene King IPA as guests in an area dominated by the big two is really rather pointless.
The GK IPA remains but the Bombardier has been replaced by Timmy Taylors Landlord or more recently Adnams Explorer. Long may it continue. London Pride also permanently available.
I say 'permanently' but unfortunately either the Pride or the aforementioned guest choice seem to be 'off' far too frequently, which leads to a run on the other.... and lo and behold only GK IPA left at the end of the weekend.

Always used to be well regarded for food (and I can vouch for that) but again, went into decline in latter years of previous landlord. Doesn't appear to have recaptured their old market as it never seems as busy in the evening as before despite return of old chef but that may be down to recession as much as anything else.
