Only came in here because I thought this pub was a freehouse and might have some decent beer. The Noah's Ark just up the road is Greene King, as is the Musgrave Arms in the other direction. GK is not my tipple and never will be. Imagine my disappointment when two of the three hand pumps were dispensing GK. Having now read 'steamingcliff's' review it is GK owned and not now a freehouse. The Landlord told me the Woodforde's Wherry was a guest ale - but the reviews below seem to suggest it has been a regular ale for over a year or more. The food is of high quality, though slightly pricey. 9 plus for most meals. Beer now 3.10, and a small glass of Zinfandel wine 3.90 - same price for a whole bottle from a supermarket. Owners/staff very friendly. There has been four or five changes of owner/tenants in the last ten years. Not sure if that means anything - it's just a fact. fugglehops - 29 Aug 2011 20:25 |
Visited this pub/restaurant last saturday night after being reccomended by my hairdresser. Although having read a couple of reviews on here worried me slightly, off i went. Had a warm welcome pleased ot see bar service with a smile! I noticed the decor was in need of a facelift but i spoke to the waitress and she said it was planned for early next year as the decor is currently 20 yrs old!!! All i could smell was food and the log fire which was burning away (not the smell of toilets which was the main thing i was worried about!!) we both had the rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection and the chips really were homemade!!! Did wonders for me sticking to my diet!!! Deserts did take a while to come though which was the only problem for me but the 2 waitresses were lovely and talkative . The atmosphere was buzzy and homely. Basically... Great food, nice atmosphere, lovely staff, needs decorating but you forget about it while your there because everything else is nice! Its sad to see a place like this being slated as its one of the few remaining pub/restaurants which isn't a chain. I will definitely return very soon! theonlyway20 - 3 Dec 2010 01:52 |
Isn't it worrying when the only positive response to counter bad reviews is made by a person who has only ever reviewed/rated one pub on the entire site. | | v hatter90 - 5 Nov 2010 17:54 |
Had Sunday Lunch at this pub today and having read some of the reviews on this sight was a bit worried. I'm pleased to say it was lovely. There was a really large party in and I did wonder if our little table of four would be forgotten, but to the contrary we were made to feel really special. My partner was offered a taste of the Ales before purchasing and he opted for Woodford's Wherry. The rest of us had wine. Food was excellent. We will be going again. AlisonWall - 31 Oct 2010 19:38 |
Annoyingly half profiteering restaurant, half boozy local. We entered looking for a sensibly priced meal and a decent pint in a trad pub atmosphere. First thing noticed on walking through the door was an overwhelming smell of lavatories, like backed up drains, causing me to gag on the air. One half is done up with white table cloths and candles into an overly pretentious (for a country pub) dining area, no doubt to match the pretentious food. The Menu itself was a rip off, Seriously, 8.95 for Scampi, chips (only 9 chips too!) and peas?! I'd expect to pay that in a capital city restaurant, not a greene king pub. Such pricing is symptomatic of landlords who care not for customer satisfaction but merely lining their pockets. I will leave the price alone as ample comment on the 18.50 steak chips and peas. As beer goes, choice was IPA @ 2.90 , Abbot or Woodfordes Wherry (which I was granted a sample but was not to personal taste). Other half of the pub was full of boozing locals which is fair play, but when IPA is that much I can't figure why you'd choose to drink there. Won't be returning any time soon, our wallets could not possibly take the strain. hatter90 - 10 Oct 2010 16:34 |
