Great selection of beers, changing regularly. Had a lovely Nethergate mild on last visit, the name escapes me. Ales straight from the cask. Food not to bad. Well worth visiting. soul223 - 22 Jun 2011 00:46 |
Nice pub in North Essex countryside not far from the Colne Valley. This is currently Camra North West Essex Pub of the Year. This is a pub with a large restaurant area to the rear. The bar is covered in many old pennies which I certainly have not seen before. A pool table is available and I noticed a fish tank which is unusual to see in a pub. Various Second World War pictures of planes and Churchill on the wall. Mighty Oak Oscar Wilde, Maldon Gold & Burntwood with Cains Dark Mild all served straight from the cask. Good to see the pub supporting mild month with two beers last weekend. I think the beers were 2.50 here and were in good form. I also noticed two real ciders; Westons Old Rosie and County Perry. The pub has a separate lodge at the back with a number of rooms if you wish to stay the night. Love_good_ale - 24 May 2009 23:28 |
Low beamed country boozer featuring a real cider and perry alongside 4 interesting beers, including a Mild. My halves were served in a thick-handled beer mug, always a bonus. Bogs could do with a refurb though. Gigantic banner outside proudly proclaiming that they don't serve Greedy King beer - good on you boys! All in all, a great pub in a nice location well worth seeking out for good session. Quinno - 11 Jul 2007 22:46 |
Visited here last Saturday on a bus tour of pubs/breweries from North Surrey. What an excellent boozer - keen and friendly landlord and attractive bar staff (I refer to Charlie). Ales all in top notch form including Oscar Wilde Mild. Try working out the value of the pre-decimal pennies that cover the entire bar. I believe we were told 132 in pre-decimal value - could be worth a lot more now - especially if you can find a 1933 penny in there somewhere! Oh and they are proud of the fact that they do NOT sell beers from GK! bobinman - 26 May 2007 12:23 |
A cracking little pub in the north Essex countryside, on the main road between Haverhill and Halstead / Braintree. They serve ales straight from the cask, all from behind the bar. There are usually three, more when its busy, and there is always something different. They even have proper cider, the strong stuff from Kent, Biddenden I think. The landlord does all the cooking too, they have a separate restaurant at the back, overlooking their new hotel - handy if you've had a few too many, or if you want to travel round the area. And it must be one of the few pubs to have decent wines. Its a great place to stop off at, trouble is once you've stopped, you don't want to go again! Phil - 9 Aug 2005 18:55 |
