Despite its full name, Taylors Eating House is now a Wadsworths pub, being taken over some time in 2012 i believe. It is situated on the very pleasant pedestrianised area in the heart of Cheltenham town centre. It has a fantastic creeper clad exterior, but the interior, although pleasant enough, being dark wood with comfortable seating areas with sofa’s and chairs and several screens for the sport, just didn’t live up to the exterior for me. What didn’t help also was that on arriving at the bar, the four real ale hand pumps were all reverse clipped apart from a solitary 6X which was all that was available. And as the harassed staff were run off their feet with food orders I didn’t bother to enquire why the Henrys IPA, Swordfish and Horizon Golden Ale were not replaced on the mid-afternoon of the first bank holiday in May, which was a glorious day and they should have been shifting tons of the stuff. There is also apparently a downstairs bar which is popular with students. But on a fine weather day like the one we were blessed with the big advantage of this pub is the outside seating area which protrudes out into the pedestrian walkway. The first section inside the iron railings has large umbrellas equipped with heaters for the evenings, and then the section beyond in the pedestrian area has wicker tables and chairs under standard pub umbrellas. And according to a blue plaque on the pub wall, Sir Benjamin Baker a famous local civil engineer lived in a farm cottage on the site. Food menu is mainly fried stuff with burgers and chips dominating. And amusingly the non-fried items seemed to just be salads which were on the menu under a section called Healthy options, which seemed to be recognition that most of the other options were unhealthy. This was actually a very pleasant place to sit and have an alfresco pint. I just caught it on a day when it was suffering from poor bar management. Gann - 31 May 2013 15:03 |
Used to be excellent for sports ('the best sports bar in cheltenham') but post 2005 they stopped showing three games at the same time on differnet screens (brillant!) and put shelving in the way and rearranged the furniture badly! Still good drinks and staff however. Used to be one of my favourite pubs in the world! Not now... pintofcase - 20 Jun 2011 01:37 |
A great pub. Worth a visit. sonnyjim - 13 Dec 2006 13:43 |
The best pint in Cheltenham from the best pub in Cheltenham served by the best looking barmaids in Cheltenham - need I say more? As for the prices... you're paying for the quality. Rich P - 8 Oct 2004 09:14 |
Again, I've always found the SOuth African family that run Tailors very friendly and willing to accept a good barracking about the rugby! A great venue for watching sport, the beers good and they open early for rugby games in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, the outdoor seating area has doubled in size recently, so it's even better in the summer. James Clay - [email protected] - 11 Jun 2004 12:32 |
