By most young folk's measure this sort of pub would be consigned to the history books, for it openly and proudly eschews all that is contemporary and corporate, but for many (and not only weirds with beards; I'm a clean-shaven 29-year-old!) it is a welcome departure from that transient, superficial, themed High Street nonsense, and thankfully both the chavs and regatta types seem to avoid it, partly due to its tucked-away location.
The focus is firmly on traditional, but simple values: a range of intriguing and well-kept ales, banter (not only between punters but also with the eccentric but rather shrewd landlord), and a no-frills, totally genuine and unpretentious atmosphere. Yes, maintenance of this rare 1820s building could be higher on the list, yet it somehow adds to the overall charm of the place. The licensee isn't TRYING to create a back-to-basics pub, it just IS! A real community place, that happily most tourists stay away from, but only because they believe they'd receive a poor reception.
And one doesn't even have to be a Marxist to drink here!
However, if I recall correctly when I visited in May, the landlord told us that he was going to be moving on in a few months - I think the decision has already been made and he isn't up for persuasion. I can't think that this place could ever stay the same after the present incumbent's departure...

An absolute gem of a pub, and well worth a visit. This pub is designed for drinking beer, with no frivolous extras; I love it. Used to get in here regularly when I lived nearby and still like to pop in when I'm passing. Eccentric locals, enthusiastic landlord who knows his beer, (literally) barking dog...it's definitely an experience!

The Wharf House is the only original 1820s building still standing in this part of Oxford; the rest were demolished to make way for the soulless flats and BT building that now occupy the area. Formerly one of Oxford's slum area; the urban myth (may or may not be true) is that Karl Marx visited St Ebbe's when researching Das Kapital...he would have enjoyed popping in to the Wharf House for a pint certainly.

All true, but the regulars can take the piss out of students.

Unspoilt, very basic boozer in the St. Ebbes district of Oxford. Tony, the landlord, is Cornish and this is often reflected in his choice of beers in a very interesting range. RCH Pitchfork is a regular, but last night I had a pint of HALZEPHRON GOLD 3.6% brewed by the ORGANIC BREWERY in Helston, Cornwall. Do not be put off by the slightly rough-and-ready appearance of this pub - it is a gem. The locals are very friendly, and a warm welcome awaits the beer-oriented visitor. Landlord appears well clued up on breweries up and down the country, and he even has connections with the Wenlock Arms in London! Another amazing feature is the music system. Although an array of CDs is stacked neatly behind the bar, VINYL LPs are his speciality, and he was playing 60s/70s LPs last night! It's a miracle such a place still thrives in today's modern world of Yates's and Wetherspoons! Visit this pub. It has to be seen to be believed.
